Mainstream media outlets largely ignored Georgia Senate candidate Herschel Walkers absence from a Sunday evening debate, after many journalists had celebrated an earlier performance by arguing Walker exceeded their low expectations.
The New York Times wrote about the second debate in a short piece as part of a running live blog about the midterms, rather than devoting a unique story to the topic. Politico devoted just a single paragraph to Walkers absence in their widely read morning edition of Playbook, which also linked to the APs reporting for further reading. As of publication, it does not appear that Axios covered the second debate at all. The Washington Post didnt offer original coverage, instead reprinting The Associated Press write-up. Both papers used the same headline, noting that Walker skipped the debate almost as an afterthought.
The Sunday debate was the states second between incumbent Sen. Raphael Warnock and Walker, following an initial debate the previous Friday. Mainstream coverage of that debate largely praised Walker for clearing the low bar he had set for himself, allowing his campaign to control the narrative and launder an objectively weak performance into a relative victory.
New York Times national political correspondent Trip Gabriel epitomized this impulse in a widely mocked tweet, arguing that in clearing the low bar he set for himself, Walker did what he set out to do. (Gabriel also has not tweeted about Walkers absence in the second debate.)

(95,174 posts)Senator Raphael Warnock, the incumbent and a Democrat, excoriated his Republican opponent, Mr. Walker, who chose not to attend the debate, arguing that Mr. Walkers history of domestic violence, lies about his past and refusal to participate in the forum made him unqualified for office.
Throughout the hourlong matchup in Atlanta, Mr. Warnock stepped out of character, opting for direct attack lines over the thinly veiled criticisms he has leveled at Mr. Walker for most of the campaign. He answered panelists questions with a mix of policy points and full-throated rebukes of Mr. Walkers claims about his personal life, business prowess and academic record. He described Mr. Walkers well-documented history of violence in reference to reports about Mr. Walkers domestic violence against his ex-wife, Cindy Grossman, calling them disturbing.
The Senate races lesser-known contender, the Libertarian candidate Chase Oliver, did participate in the debate, bringing up policy points like supporting L.G.B.T.Q. rights and keeping the government out of health care and energy investments. He found common ground with Mr. Warnock as both hammered their opponent for his absence from the debate stage.

Oliver is the third name on the ballot in the marquee matchup between Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock and Republican Herschel Walker.
In most states, that make would Oliver an afterthought. But Georgia law requires an outright majority to win statewide office. With polls suggesting a tight contest between Warnock and Walker, it may not take a considerable share of the vote for Oliver to force a runoff, potentially repeating the 2020 scenario when Georgias two runoffs helped Democrats secure narrow control on Capitol Hill.
I dont have any interest in partisan bickering. I owe no allegiance to either party. I only owe allegiance to you, the voter, Oliver said Sunday night on an Atlanta debate stage, as he urged Georgia voters to send a message to the two major parties by denying both Warnock and Walker a first-round victory.
The Atlanta Press Club debate was likely Olivers lone opportunity in the spotlight. He shared the stage with Warnock. An empty podium stood between them to represent Walker, who declined the Press Clubs invitation.
Warnock, the 53-year-old senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church who won the seat in a 2021 special election, and Walker, a 60-year-old businessman and former football star, met in their only scheduled one-on-one debate Friday in Savannah. Oliver was not included in that debate because he did not meet organizers polling threshold.
