Two more buses arrived at the citys Port Authority Bus Terminal just after 6 a.m. Friday, adding to the more than 17,000 migrants Abbott has bused to New York in a sick political stunt.

I hope the O'Rourke campaign is running ads in Espanol on radio, tv, and social media sites telling the Hispanic voters
in TX that Abbott hates them and thinks it is OK to ship them like cattle using their tax dollars.

(25,807 posts)Migrants are free to travel after they have been processed.
If they choose to get on a bus, that is their choice.
It certainly isn't ethical but I really don't think writing a law will work. If we create a law, it could force migrants to stay in Texas or stay in Mexico etc etc etc.

The VOTERS are not the ones being shipped off.
And there are a great many Hispanic voters who have even less affection for 'illegal immigrants' than the average Caucasian does. Why? The fact they're voters, it means they're here 'legally' and a lot of them are quite resentful towards 'illegals' because they feel like they (or dad or grandma) 'did things the right way'.
I would express it as 'people requesting legal asylum from Latin America' rather than 'Hispanics' is what I'm saying.
You want to inspire a feeling of kinship, and my sense is that people from the South feel a stronger kinship to their country of origin than they do towards 'Hispanics', in general. It's not a hegemonic bloc IOW.
You have to play a card like this one ... strategically.

(25,807 posts)Many have origins from Northern Mexico and are old mixed (mestizo). The mixing goes back centuries, that so there isn't as "I get this from Spain and I get this from Native American" (It's all blended. It's more like My nose looks like an Aztec nose..No it looks like a Roman nose..when in fact, no one knows where the nose came from!)
They see themselves as business people, ranchero types, or laborers. These groups of people came here in mass during the Mexican Revolution. My husband's grandfather was a laborer for Southern Pacific RR in Monterrey, MX. When my husband's DNA came back as 50% Native American he was kinda surprised, but when I told someone he was NA, he did not know what to say...He just said, "But I don't belong to a tribe"..LOL Which is true, because the tribes were wiped out in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Northern Mexico is alot like the SW US. Trucks, guns, cattle, heat and drought, beer and cantinas etc. (In the 18th and 19th century, it was "cowboy" country)
They don't have much in common with indigenous which are from Southern Mexico and Guatemala. Very different types of people and very different cultures.

(1,039 posts)Beto's adds have been, as I see them, poorly done.
There is one running pretty regular now with the mother of one of the Uvalde students which just says, "Abott has done nothing so I am voting for Beto". No what he would do, because as everyone knows the only thing that can be done is to limit access to guns and that issue in Texas will get you a loss.
Assuming hispanics are for open borders is foolish.

There is a lot of talk on DU about how do we get back Hispanic voters in Texas and why are they voting Republican. One issue is border security and Abbott, I'm sorry to say, is winning votes by bussing migrants to places like NYC, DC and Chicago. NYC and DC are now throwing a NIMBY fit because a few thousand migrants have shown up on their doorstep? Want to guess how many migrants are dumped in small Texas towns on a daily basis with no support, no resources? Try to imagine how frustrated Hispanic voters are when their schools are constantly locked down because of bailouts where Border Patrol is chasing down smugglers in the area.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/07/19/texas-border-control-tactics-uvalde-school-shooting/10093512002/
Just because a Hispanic voter in Texas has the same color skin as a migrant doesn't mean they relate to that person. Hispanic voters want security, safe neighborhoods, and for the border to be secured. 11,000 migrants being given bus tickets to New York, rather than being dumped in Del Rio, which has no resources to help them probably feels like someone finally addressing a problem in a sensible way.
I am no Abbott fan, btw. I understand he's doing this as a political stunt and using these people as props. But democrats have to understand what life is like for people living in border states. All these posters freaking out about 11,000 migrants arriving in New York... do you have any idea how many migrants enter Texas every month? 116,000 in August of this year.
I get that the mayor of New York is frustrated, but I have no sympathy for him. It's NIMBYism, pure and simple. He's now having to deal with a tiny fraction of what border states have been dealing with for years, and is freaking out and pointing fingers.
Martha's Vineyard called it a "humanitarian crisis" when 50 migrants showed up. 50 migrants. And they were taken away in 24 hours.
Humanitarian crisis.
50 migrants who they were relieved of in 24 hours.
Imagine if they had to deal with what border states deal with on a daily basis.

(14,149 posts)Never have I felt in danger from immigrants. Cities like El Paso, Brownsville, and other border cities have LOWER rates of crime than most cities. Immigrants commit crime at lower rates than citizens. Any fear felt is rooted in xenophobia or racism.

(12,037 posts)Maine is desperate for workers, and we're losing a lot of central Americans to Canada, where there's no wait for work permits. There was an article in the Maine newspapers recently from seafood processors in Maine who bemoan their inability to hire migrants as workers. Instead, those workers head north to Canada, where their seafood plants are booming, and Maine has to send its raw products there to be processed.

(3,447 posts)or has been the past two weeks. Almost every block of advertising on KMPX, Telemundo, and Univision contain one (at least) Beto campaign advertisement (no idea about radio ad buys though).
This week, he's pushing hard his bit from the debate on these ads This hateful rhetoric, this treating human beings as political pawns, talking about invasions and Texans defending themselves thats how people get killed at the Walmart in El Paso.
And I like that. He calls ally and opponent alike 'human' rather than placing them in politically convenient piles of labeling.
