We're watching Patrick Stewart. He is star of a Brit series where he plays a Brit government consultant who's job it is to eliminate or at least, address dangers such as pandemics and global warming.
We both agree that Cap't Picard would be better suited to handle such emergencies than would Cap't. James Kirk.
I say that Spock would be a better "second" in such emergencies than would Data. Ex. says Data, because he has more information in is memory banks. Spock has the human flexibility to make a decision that could include intuition, although rarely used.
Help me win this one.

(2,261 posts)Second fiddle, if you must. They temper the breathing.
Data is static, breathing dynamic. Spock has to breath and his breathing cycle influences the room.
His logic is dynamic.

(1,407 posts)Spock's humanity and flexibility would be better for handling the people side of the problem: persuading people, strategies for negotiations, etc.
Data's raw calculation and information access make him suited for the scientific part: gauging the likely success rates of solutions, feasibility of proposed technology and its uses including potential side effects, etc.
Ideally, both would be available. But if you had to choose only one, then determine if the biggest problems are the human factor or the scientific factor and select accordingly.

(26,756 posts)Spock better fills the gaps in Kirks abilities and character - while Data better aligns with Picard.
They were literally designed that way
