(330 posts)But the sacrifice is well worth it.....people were tormented and many died for the right to vote....standing in line pales in comparison......Forward Obama 2012 fired up ready to go....

(7,515 posts)We had people taken to the hospital dehydrated or just plain exhausted from the effort of standing in line. It's fine if your healthy and have no other pressing responsibilities...but these elderly folks deserve medals for what they are doing.

(330 posts)Glib......Did I say that anyone should have to go thru this..? I have relatives that died to vote I'm not the sos he created this clusterfuck...I happen to also have elderly relatives that stood in that line 5 hrs they said it was worth it to have their vote counted......and I think the world of them....

(7,515 posts)Florida needs to get rid of the republicans in the state government....it's a mess down here. I will be working the polls tomorrow in my own precinct....I can't tell you how much I am dreading it.

(42,757 posts)I'm also a Floridian (Polk County - hardcore red) and I'm curious how severe the problem might be.
Thanks in advance.

(7,515 posts)our elections supervisor is a Democrat. But so much of what goes on is dictated by State Law...and budgetary constraints. For example, by Law every poll worker must receive at least 4 hours of training before an election. The exception is that if you worked the polls doing the same job in a primary election, you don't have to be retrained for that job, that year. But I worked a different job at the polls for the Democratic primary than I will be working tomorrow so I had to go to a second training session. The day I went to training for the general election there was also a training class for the people working the early voting sites....When the lines became horrifically long there just weren't any more poll workers available with the required training. Also by law, poll workers are not allowed to leave the polling place until everyone has voted, the ballots have been counted (in order to justify the count with the scanners) and all the voting equipment has been taken down. The entire problem could have been avoided by having more polling places available. For example, my own precinct assignment was moved from two blocks from my home to 10 blocks away...no big deal, but there was no early vote site in my town.
To be honest, I think if Polk County is indeed hardcore red, you won't have the problems we have here with long lines and thrown away ballots..it's the Blue counties they have targeted....Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade...all large population centers as well.

(3,398 posts)Early voting in FL has been cut from 14 to 8 days this year.
Further, early voting sites are very limited. In Orange County (Orlando) there are a total of 12 sites. Population >1.1 million people.
All that said, there have already been over 4 million votes cast in Florida. And tomorrow that's 4 million fewer people who will be heading to their neighborhood polling stations.

(3,398 posts)That does not include Absentee Mail In voting.
Again, I believe for those who are able to get to their neighborhood polling stations tomorrow, the lines should not be too long.
We shall see.

(66 posts)I had one troll on another site telling me if I wanted to live in a Democracy I should move. Really! Their exact words. They can justify anything....from "rape is God's will" to "people don't have the right to vote." We will win this thing....and it will be a message not just to the world but also to the youth of this nation that it is not ok to race bait, to think of women as property, to lie, to cheat and to steal.
