WASHINGTON Representative Jodey Arrington, a conservative Texas Republican, believes it is well past time for something the nation has not experienced for more than two centuries: a debate over rewriting the Constitution.
I think the states are due a convention, said Mr. Arrington, who in July introduced legislation to direct the archivist of the United States to tally applications for a convention from state legislatures and compel Congress to schedule a gathering when enough states have petitioned for one. It is time to rally the states and rein in Washington responsibly.
To Russ Feingold, the former Democratic senator from Wisconsin and president of the American Constitution Society, a liberal judicial group, that is a terrible idea. Mr. Feingold sees the prospect of a constitutional convention as an exceptionally dangerous threat from the right and suggests it is closer to reality than most people realize as Republicans push to retake control of Congress in Novembers midterm elections.
We are very concerned that the Congress, if it becomes Republican, will call a convention, said Mr. Feingold, the co-author of a new book warning of the risks of a convention called The Constitution in Jeopardy.

(37,073 posts)Impossible! If you think the last one was contentious...
That last one was almost entirely reasonable men with the idea of compromise.
This one would be loaded with Taliban Christians whose idea of compromise is total conquest.
That is just one example of problems to be expected.

(46,788 posts)That's the path of crooked fraudsters. Saw it in the nineties when a local ex-judge tried to convince homeowners to abandon their PUD if they wanted control over development. Saw it in my own HOA when people who were determined to take over our common grounds did everything they could to get us to chuck our HOA documents. without telling everyone the property rights they were given in those douments.
Damn it. This is a game as old as time. This is not a new strategy. Our local fraudsters relied on secret meetings. We couldn't fight against them because they were determined and always pulled the rug from under us. And, yes, there was fear. Fear of not knowing how far they would go to get their way.

(21,748 posts)Bush already shredded the Bill of Rights with his 'Patriot' Act - largely written by a Vietnamese dictatorship nostalgic, and meant to mimic 3rd world-style 'state of siege' declarations (though many of its most abusive provisions, thank God, have never been implemented).
And Bush was a downright moderate compared to today's RW crop. So you can imagine what beasties would make it into such a new charter, if they had the chance.

(24,382 posts)Simple.
The right wing wet dream is a Constitutional Convention.
That way they get to do away with the first clause of the 1st Amendment and institutionalize Christianity into daily life.
The left is too detached from this issue and will get bowled over by this totalitarian, albeit minority ideology.
It can not bloody well be allowed under the current system.
Do away with the Electoral College and institute the proper voting reforms, give all that a couple election cycles to work things out and then
yeah
maybe.
Until then? No fucking way.

(21,730 posts)don't be........... Congress only calls a convention is 2/3rds of the states ask for it. That's 34
"Republicans control 30 State Houses, while Democrats have control of 18. For the other two states: Republicans have a numerical majority in Alaska, but power is shared via an interparty coalition. Nebraska has a unicameral (single body) legislature; see the State Senate page for details."
They've only passed a resolution in 19 states calling for a convention but you know they are just laying low to avoid panic. if they get control of 34 states they will strike. you can easily see how voter suppression is paying a part in this though.
let's assume nebraska goes along with them, that's 31. maybe alaska too. that's 32. if they can suppress the vote in minnesota and virginia, which are split now, they could make it to 34.
this is why, other than codifying Roe, passing the voting rights act is the single most important piece of legislation to the survival of this nation. but we need 52 senators to get rid of the filibuster to do it. This election is so important.

(8,917 posts)With the BuyBull. Outlaw constitutional scholars as judges that make judgements of legal cases based on what they think the founding fathers meant. Put Mega Church pastors in the courts to interpret what THEY believe the BuyBull authors intent was.
There you have it. The Great America as dreamed up by the GQP.

(37,174 posts)States rights means two things and two things only.
1. Slavery.
2. The ability to fuck up the results of popular vote outcomes for President. Dems have won seven of the last eight popular votes for President. Why? Because the VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS dont give a fuck about conservative values. Kansas turning down abortion abolition by a wide fuck you zealots margin. Exhibit alpha.
You expend your energy trying to take power when you dont know how to lead, govern, or manage money. Its so much easier to storm the Capitol.

(1,912 posts)I thought they revered the Constitution so much? It couldnt be that they cherry-pick it, could they?
I mean, I too, would love to rewrite the Constitution, but my version of what the Constitution should look like looks far different than theirs.

(20,140 posts)Article V of the Constitution allows 2/3 of state legislatures to force Congress to call a convention for proposing amendments.
The convention would simply take the place of Congress in proposing amendments. Every proposed amendment would have to be ratified by 3/4 of the states.
