Republican Sen. Ron Johnson this week endorsed a proposal to "coax" seniors out of retirement to address so-called worker shortages, drawing backlash from his Democratic opponent and other critics who noted the GOP lawmaker's long history of attacking Social Security.
"There are a number of innovative ideas I would support," Johnson, R-Wis., said during a tele-town hall with constituents on Wednesday as he's locked in a close reelection race with Democratic challenger Mandela Barnes in the key battleground state of Wisconsin.
"Former Senator Phil Gramm came to the Senate, we were talking about our labor shortage, and one of his suggestions was to coax seniors that could reenter the workforcedon't charge them payroll tax," Johnson said in remarks first reported by the Heartland Signal. "They're not paying it anyway so if they want to get back and earn a few extra bucks, let them start working."
The Republican senator's comments came weeks after he sparked outrage by suggesting that funding for Social Security and Medicare should be discretionary rather than mandatory, a change that would pave the way for cuts or the complete demise of the popular programs.

(25,929 posts)While I sometimes daydream about getting a job because it would be nice to have extra money, I can manage quite well on my retirement income, and honestly don't want to have to get up early to get to a job at 8 am. Actually, more than a decade ago, I had a temporary job that was about 2 miles from where I live, so the commute was minimal, but dear lord, getting up early enough to make it to the job at 8 am was torture. I was extremely happy when the week ended.

(54,506 posts)Almost, that is. As a social worker, her job was working with difficult cases of long-term unemployed people, and re-training them so that they could get back into the work force UNTIL they became seniors, and could retire.
The difference is that she studied for her job and got her diploma in her field. She knew what she was doing, was good at it, got paid little for it, and did it anyway, out of conviction. RoJo the Clown did not study for his job, has no diploma in his field, doesnt know what he is doing, helps no one, and is paid about $174,000 a year more than he is worth to society. Hell probably leave office with a pension that is larger than what my wife took home when she was workingone of those cases where theft is legal.
