Republican Sen. Ron Johnson this week endorsed a proposal to "coax" seniors out of retirement to address so-called worker shortages, drawing backlash from his Democratic opponent and other critics who noted the GOP lawmaker's long history of attacking Social Security.
"There are a number of innovative ideas I would support," Johnson (R-Wis.) said during a tele-town hall with constituents on Wednesday as he's locked in a close reelection race with Democratic challenger Mandela Barnes in the key battleground state of Wisconsin.
"Former Senator Phil Gramm came to the Senate, we were talking about our labor shortage, and one of his suggestions was to coax seniors that could reenter the workforcedon't charge them payroll tax," Johnson said in remarks first reported by the Heartland Signal. "They're not paying it anyway so if they want to get back and earn a few extra bucks, let them start working."

SO your double talking words there ROJO are both hypocritical and further undermines the Social Society system...you said quote:
"don't charge them payroll tax," Johnson said in remarks first reported by the Heartland Signal. "They're not paying it anyway so if they want to get back and earn a few extra bucks, let them start working."
So in other words you think everyone should be indentured servants....after they earned the right mind you to collect" their" Social Security.....because after all these same indentured servants also made corporations millions paying zilch in taxes, but they had to pay there share of the tax....
But instead of proposing to raise the COLA cap to lets 15% to help the seniors from corporations, your plan is make them go back to work and not get taxed...and the corporations don't have to pay into the system....Ah, yes bring back to the 1800's and before Social Security was enacted in 1935, the hydra of the gilded age is ROJO wet dream .......

(9,500 posts)I am sure that extra 6% will have seniors lining up for jobs.
In reality, he is trying to make SSI solvency worse because it would cause seniors that already have to work (or choose to) to no longer pay SSI.
And of course, it's a bonus for the businesses because any retired person you employ no longer requires that 6% contribution on your part.

(37,061 posts)"don't charge them payroll tax,"... Is that fair?
After all, repubs say cancelling some student debt is not 'fair' to others.

(20,257 posts)I'm 65. I opted to take SS early because people in my family just don't live that long. I'm a bookkeeper and I ran the numbers. I just put it into savings for when I do retire (maybe, someday). But it irks me that I have to pay income tax on almost all of it. I Max out my IRA to offset it, but still.

Time to take a nap, Pops. Preferably a long one.
