How do school strikes usually work?

I just learned that the union that represents the support staff at my college/university are likely to go on strike next week or the week after. It's been so long since I've been affected by a school strike that I've actually forgotten how they usually handle things. Do they usually extend the school year by the length of the strike, so professors can pick up where they left off? This I would be OK with, if not that's a blow. I fully support Unions and the right for teachers and support staff to get better pay. I think most university professors are usually fairly well compensated but HS teachers certainly are not and I suspect that support staff aren't either. Still, it's always difficult to have an interruption late in your semester like this, it takes the wind out of your sails.

Are the standardized test going to be pushed back or required scores lowered to account for the reduced teaching time? That would be the only fair thing to do.

I was in first grade in Chicago at the time so my memory might be wrong, but we had school on several days that were left open for snow days and canceled spring break. The school year was not extended even though the days we made-up didn't make-up for all of the days missed.
