I just wanted to thank all those working on her release.
If you have seen the Russian movie "12", you will understand why I am concerned about her long term well being and the prospect of a "fair" trial and sentencing. As a Phoenix Mercury fan and fellow American, I want her back in action sooner rather than latter.

Tim Kaine believes basketball stars detention is to make her part of this chess game
A senior Democratic senator has said he believes Russia wants to use the WNBA star Brittney Griner, who has been held in Moscow for more than a month on accusations she smuggled drugs into the country, as a negotiating chip regarding the war in Ukraine.

I think theres no doubt that her detention, and then this continuation of the imprisonment, is all to try to make her a hostage and a part of this chess game, Tim Kaine, of Virginia, told Full Court Press in an interview scheduled to air in full on Sunday.
Vladimir Putin and the Russians want to use her as a negotiating chip and what a horrific thing to do to someone, Kaine said.
Griner, 31, plays for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA but plays in Russia during the US offseason. She is a two-time Olympic champion.

(15,933 posts)Shes already pleaded guilty. Just waiting on sentencing. I think after that, Russia will be willing to negotiate.

(2,021 posts)Russia grabbed her specifically for that purpose.
Let's not make any bones about it - she is a political prisoner. I'm sick to death of all the people whining about how she should not get special help "just because of her celebrity status." They're idiots. She was grabbed as a political bargaining chip specifically because of her celebrity status. Because she is a political prisoner, we need to do everything we can to get her home safely, and quickly.

(50,302 posts)illegal. If Pootie wasn't on his crazed, vicious, power trip, she might already have come home. As it stands, she's in real peril of spending years locked up in Russia. Biden's in a tough spot on this one. Pootie will most likely demand Ukraine for a swap.
Wants Viktor Bout. A Russian arms dealer we have in custody serving a 25 year sentence.

(4,616 posts)They want to use her as a bargaining chip. And she handed them the opportunity to do so. It's certainly not the first time something like this has happened in a non-friendly country. What was she thinking carrying something into Russia that would get her in her current predicament? I have a prescription won't work in Russia and anyone who thinks it would is an idiot. Why doesn't the WNBA make sure they are clean as whistles when they enter a foreign country? Rushing to pack doesn't cut it either. If you insist on traveling to non friendly countries then you better make sure you are squeaky clean when you do. And even that is not a guarantee. Newsflash, your constitutional rights as an American don't follow you all over the globe.

(51,308 posts)She was traveling to her other team in Russia, where she plays during the off-season.
She might well have forgotten she had those in her bags given the amount of traveling she does. Or, she might have gotten away with it previously and got confident. It was a very small amount.
If she did take it in, accidentally or on purpose, it's on her and the WNBA had nothing whatsoever to do with it. She's an adult woman, and yes, she should have been damn careful when she packed. I know that I am, no matter where I travel.
