Dear friends on the DU,
It has been a long time since I have raised funds for a fellow DUer. Akoto is a long time DUer on SSI looking for a little help. Rather than just asking for money, he is asking for two things. The first won't cost you a cent. Just subscribe to his YouTube page here: Legacy Ark Games - https://www.youtube.com/c/legacyarkgames . Secondly a cash donation will help him buy some equipment to help provide some small income for him. Marta and I are in on this. I hope you will be too. A K&R for this post will help with visibility. Also see this post where he goes into greater detail about his hopes and dreams: https://www.democraticunderground.com/10181675517

I have a gaming-related company interested in discussing a fixed rate contract with me if I can go from 11k to 20k subscribed. With the help of investors, I think I can, but I really have nowhere to ask other than this community I've been a part of for 17 years. I'm a star member, longtime juror, and group moderator. Not a fly by night operation. I can easily manage this from my chair if I get the equipment and funding I need to meet these initial growth goals.
I know making a living from a YouTube channel about games sounds silly, but a lot of people do make a living from it these days, and I can easily manage it from my chair if I get the equipment and funding I need to meet these initial growth goals. That is the essence of my fundraising goal a way to support myself and help others.
Its difficult to ask for help, but at the same time, it supports both my good cause and the security of my personal future. The long and short of it is that I am physically disabled and housebound. My parents have both been very ill in the past years, with my dad having been found to have stage 4 cancer, even. It has scared me into the realization that, if I stay pinned under the rules of my disability insurance, I'll be living on the street eventually. For a long time now, I've been wanting to turn a very important hobby of mine into a living as others have done, one which would give me security while still enabling me to help the people I try to help.
My YouTube (and Twitch) channel, Legacy Ark Games, brings viewers along as I try out games contributed to me mostly by kind developers and producers who would like to support my cause. This entertains whoever may wander along, but I hope that it also educates disabled gamers like myself as to which games might interest them and whether the gameplay is accessible for their disability. I know that just watching these videos before I had the channel kind of helped me sanity during really bad pain, which is what inspired me to create it as a worthwhile escape. Now, as I have improved my skills and invested a bit in it, Legacy Ark Games has become a channel which works frequently with developers both to show their games off and to refine them with accessibility options when requested.
So, the goal is to raise the money I need for a piece of equipment to facilitate the growth of the channel, as well as sufficient funding to bring in new followers to the tune of 9k people.
Me again. I hope you help with this worthwhile project.

(4,266 posts)I am so very grateful for your support. A subscription on my YouTube channel is free, and considering I have 9k people to line up in order to secure the contract I hope to, a subscribe counts every bit as much to me as monetary contribution.
This being said, I know these are tough times all around and those who have given monetarily do very much have my gratitude. I'm looking to get some equipment which will open a new format of gaming I believe will broaden accessibility to new persons while still entertaining and informing players of all kinds who happen along to watch my videos.
It's humbling to ask for help, as said, frankly a bit embarrassing. That being said, life at $500/mo on SSI with no coverage for my medical care now is barely sustainable because I live with my folks and have their help with housing and such. If anything happened to them, I'd be dead in the water. I have to give some thought to what I can do from home and some days, what I can do while in pretty bad shape. Turning my YouTube channel into a full time commitment leads those possibilities. I'd love to make a game of my own one day, though, after showcasing the games of so many others!
Thanks for helping and giving some hope, folks. Whatever I may gain from this fundraiser, I am grateful for and will put to good use furthering the goals Steve mentioned and which are discussed in my post. A lot can be done with even a little money, and those subscriptions take me step by step toward that 20k minimum I need for the contract with the gaming-related website!
All of that being said, please only give if you can really afford to. I certainly don't want anyone going without to give me a hand. With patience, I'll make progress.

(4,266 posts)I'd never imagined that I would find a way to even finance the low end goal for my endeavors, but thanks to your generosity and the help of Omaha Steve, I'm almost to that first goal!
Also, I'd like to thank everyone who has subscribed to my YouTube channel, whether you were also able to contribute funds or not. Each subscription makes it that much less difficult for me to reach the 20k subscribers I need, allowing me to obtain the fixed rate contract I've been offered. Subscribing is free and you won't get spammed or anything (unless you click to be alerted about my new videos - which I hope you enjoy!), so even if you can't or would rather not give money, those subscriptions are every bit as appreciated.
I am, once again, embarrassed and humbled to have taken this step in asking the community for help getting out from under the restrictions of living on disability. As well, I'll have improved means to help the people I try to benefit receive new information in new formats, and with a higher standard of quality. Not that those of you watching for entertainment aren't just as important and on my mind for options to improve upon! I
hope to make these videos a living as soon as I have the equipment and funding needed, and as such, giving people that level of excellence I aspire to is very important to me as an entertainer and an educator within a niche of the gaming industry. If I am so blessed as to make it there, DU is certainly going to get a big thank you from me on my channel, as well as some on video demonstration of what the contributions provided.
Thank you very much! I'm at a loss for anything more eloquent to say.

(4,266 posts)I'd be delighted if we were to make it. If, and only if, you are able to spare the funds and you find my cause worthy of supporting -- I'd be so grateful for your help.
Not hitting the second goalpost of $1k will require me to figure out some other method of getting the investments necessary to fully monetize the channel as a career, but we'll see where I stand when the fundraising ends tomorrow night.

(4,266 posts)Thank you all so much for your support. I never imagined I'd find a way to reach that first goal, and I can do a great deal with it.
That being said, we still have until tomorrow night before Steve calls it on his own work on the fundraiser, as was planned. We still hope that somehow, the $1k goal can be reached, as it would cover all of the bases toward setting up my new career. Again, thank you all so much for your generosity in what you've given so far! If I don't make it to the second line, I'm no less grateful and will make the best of what I have.

(135,841 posts)I am short this month but would love to help if I could. DU has been so great in supporting me and my mom when we needed it. Instead of a GoFundMe I am trying out a couple credit cards until I hear about my disability claim. I know what it is like to have financial stress, and I hope things go well for you.

(4,266 posts)So grateful to have made it just as far as I have! Today is the last hurrah for the fundraiser, so if you'd like to try and push us toward the final $1k mark, I'd be deeply grateful for your help. Assuming I don't make it, I'll have to find an alternate means to fundraiser in order to more immediately make a career of what I'm doing. I'll be no less thankful, but if we somehow make that leap today, you guys will found my new business and have my eternal gratitude!
If you can't contribute financially, that's okay! However, please do consider a (free) subscription to my YouTube channel, as getting to 20k subscribers will put a fixed rate contract with a gaming-related website within reach for me. You don't get spammed or anything. It'll only send you mail if you click for alerts when I put up a new video on Legacy Ark Games or start a stream. It's a great way to help if you don't have spare funds to give, or you can do both!

(4,266 posts)Our plan was to stop the fundraiser as of Tuesday night, but given I lack for many alternative communities to seek help from, we've decided to keep on pushing for the final $1k goal for a few more days. That amount would get me fully set up to take my YouTube channel into career mode with the equipment needed, as well as the professional assistance to get the large number of subscribers for that fixed rate contract which will really secure some income.
It has been humbling to ask for help in this way (I know I say this a lot), but I never imagined that I would even reach the first goal of $300 by reaching out here. The fact that we did is fantastic and will help me out a lot! However, it's the final $1k goal that'll get everything set which needs to be. I know that will require either a lot of donations, more than we can probably get before we stop on or a little after the 1st, or a few donors really wanting to make a miracle happen! I don't expect we'll hit $1k but every dollar given counts and will be well utilized. Even if I don't hit the mark, DU will get its promised video just for you guys showing how the funds were put toward my channel's conversion into a business venture, as well as the new equipment to explore a new gaming format to the channel ideal for persons with varying degrees of disability.
Of course, subscriptions to my channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/legacyarkgames are as valued as ever. They're also free! If you can't afford to give (or you would like to do both), you just go to my page and subscribe, that's it. You won't get spammed or anything unless you click to be alerted when I post a new video or am about to go live on a stream.
Thanks for supporting me, for supporting the disabled gamers I hope to continue helping, and for ideally making possible a broader business venture which appeals to all gamers while securing my future. I literally could not do it without you guys. The $1k goal is unlikely when it's a $700 leap from the $300 we have achieved, but any and every bit of assistance in building a better future than living on SSI is a blessing. Thanks.

(4,266 posts)That rhymed. Not a bad fundraising slogan.
Well, I've decided that today will be the last day of the fundraiser for funding to help me kick off my new career. That full one grand will put everything into place and get it moving. As it stands, you generous souls have given me $300, and I have a relevant coupon which adds $40 more for a limited time. So, we have $340 out of $1k.
I doubt if we have anyone out there who can make up that gap, but if you exist, be assured I will sing your praises (literally sing, if you request) in the goal achieved video when and if I get to make it and put it on YouTube to celebrate the greatness that is the DU community! Here's to hoping this last day is the big day, and if it's not, I'm still very grateful. You can also subscribe to my channel for free to help, which is admittedly less urgent but no less appreciated.
If you need a repeat on the points of contact to help out during this last push, to repeat:
In order to contribute funds to help me reach my $1k fundraising goal, which will go toward founding a career above disability's small stipend by helping me turn my YouTube channel into a business with a good cause, please send donations via PayPal to... [email protected]
For those of you who want to subscribe to my channel to help move the viewer count toward the 20k goal, every step helps, and it's free. You can do that here... https://www.youtube.com/c/legacyarkgames
Thank you all so much and at the end of the day, whatever is there, I will try to put to best use. I hope for what's needed to leap right into my new trade, but if not, I can at least get small aspects of it rolling.

(4,266 posts)I'm very grateful to all of you who gave to my fundraiser aiming to both establish a career better than disability whilst still doing what I love and supporting disabled gamers like myself.
The fundraiser had to end (and Omaha Steve had to sleep) eventually, and so it ends. We did not quite make the first $300 goalpost, but we got close! I'm also very thankful to those of you who subscribed on the channel. Hope you'll enjoy the videos in the future, should you choose to watch. I will save the funds contributed as I search for other ways to continue my fundraising efforts. It's most certainly a start toward better things!
