I was reading a article about the hurricane Sandy and read comments and its crazy how public racists have become. It has their real names linked to their FB profiles and they still have no shame.

Its really disgusting.

(110,159 posts)we have the internet to validate each others 'ism. we have our media and shows reinforcing our choices in racism, sexism, homophobia.
and it is a choice.

(7,515 posts)Because racists believe in a society of social classes in which minorities, women and the LGBT community are second class citizens, they see President Obama as the symbol of their own eventual relegation to that second-class status while "the others" attain first-class stature. They are incapable of of accepting that we are all first-class citizens and if you look at the original constitution and just the first 10 amendments, which they hold to be as sacred as the bible, you can see how they came to that misguided notion.
BlueToTheBone
(3,747 posts)but the realization of their lives that they are second class citizens. They have been told to blame "the other" rather than see it is a wealth separation rather than a social situation.
Sekhmets Daughter
(7,515 posts)the racists here do NOT see themselves as second-class citizens.
BlueToTheBone
(3,747 posts)was that they know something is wrong and they have to blame it on someone ...just not the real people that they should be blaming. They're told that "other is the reason."
Sekhmets Daughter
(7,515 posts)It still boils down to their view that there is an "other"

(7,515 posts)afflicted mankind since Cro-Magnon met Neanderthals and I doubt it will ever be completely eradicated. Which is not to say I believe we should just accept it as normal behavior or excuse it in any way. My personal belief is that everyone experiences, at least momentary, bouts of racism and/or bigotry but some of us repress such illogical feelings and turn to logic to guide us.

(3,747 posts)and peace will come when more and more people resist that urge and instead see one another as themselves.

(32,626 posts)no problem with blatant racism, so why should they? Hell, elected officials have no problem blatantly trying to stop people from voting. It's pretty crazy. As long as the little people on the internet can say whatever they want anonymously, with no threat of consequences, they will keep on doing it. I refuse to read those comments. That much ugly has no business being in my brain.

(552 posts)They like to show their bigotry to show they are in the club. It is their badge of honor. Their role models, like Limbaugh, Trump, Palin, Beck, Hannity, are telling them to be afraid, telling them that they should be angry, that their freedoms are being threatened, that they must be afraid of anyone who isn't like them. They must distrust any other sources of information from outside the club. The worst aspects of the human condition do the rest. Some become more extreme, more nasty, more hateful.
They are unaware that they have become advocates for big corporations to abuse the rights of ordinary people and the environment in order to make more profit for the super-rich. When pressed to explain their attitudes they can become defensive or abusive, because their very identity seems threatened. They cannot verbalize their rationale, because there isn't any rationale. They cannot express themselves in an honest or logical way. It is all at an emotional level - they have been brainwashed - brainwashed to defend corrupt big business - the true masters of our nation.

The racists are now terrified of becoming a permanent minority in this country one day.
One reason they want White people to be anti-abortion.

(175 posts)When he was on TV, it must have been in the early 90s, I was shocked at what he was saying. Shocked that people were repeating it. It was as if suddenly people didn't have to hide their nasty, hateful thoughts anymore, simply because Rush was broadcasting hatred on tv and on the radio. I remember my rich, republican boss laughing and coming up with racist phrases that he thought Rush would like.
Add to that all the hate radio and fox news, and the population of haters feel validated and think it's ok to feel the way they do.
The best we can do to combat this hatred is to teach our kids to accept that people are different and try not to teach them to hate in return.

(25,331 posts)I frequent those news sites from time to time. The NY Post always had a conservative bias, but the comments weren't outright hatred. There was some mudslinging at Romney for his tax returns and 47%. So, I don't know.
These sights should have some type of moderator. Maybe the NY Post should be exposed in the media? Maybe they should be held responsible. They are inciting hate and racism.

(27,787 posts)For the last few decades, the racists had to go underground. The word N****R could only be used in quiet rooms. No longer could it be used to put an African American in their place. That word had power, and the racists, being unable to use that word in public lost that power. And it pissed them off.
I know. I'm a white guy in my 40s and I have been in many white only situations in which that word is suddenly used. And the person using it assumes that the other white present will be fine with it. Its kind of like the racist's pressure release valve. They can't use that word freely, so the pressure builds up, and then the release it in smaller groups of like minded (or assumed like minded) people.
Obama's election ripped the scab off. And now their racism, pent up for so long, oozes out.
