Thanks demmiblue! As an artist I tried colorizing some of my black and whites and it was a lot of fun but seeing history come to us in living color is a whole different story. What a great job to have!

about eight years. When I ran out of family photos, I started colorizing historical figures of all kinds. It is a fascinating hobby watching people from the past come alive. They become more real when you add color.

What is the backstory of the women and “their” automobile? In front of the White House, no less… 🤔

I’d love the backstory, too. I have a wonderful old book from 1909 called The Woman and the Car by Dorothy Levitt. In her photos she’s every inch the Edwardian lady, but she raced cars and gives explicit instructions on how to do one’s own repairs on the road (tip: bring coveralls).

On the whole, I think it’s a matter of having the means and interest, and being unafraid of periodically getting grease under your nails.

A lot of these photos come from the Colorized History subreddit, as noted in the article.

Even if you don’t like Reddit, it’s worth it for that.

of the anti-Nazi White Rose Society. Executed by guillotine, age 22. Would have been 100 this year. The WWI german soldier. 3 year old Elvis.

I actually met Ron Smallworth, as I worked with the police auxiliary here back then. But had no idea what a dangerous assignment he had.
