(8,338 posts)He has testified, been there to support his fellow officers when they testified, supported the Sicknick family as they grieve their loss, and now is supporting other witnesses in their time of need. Thank you Officer Dunn, you are a good man.

(6,265 posts)to the present times, THIS is always how it has been. A racist nation 'loving their hero' yet if either one of these AMERICANS is seen outside the 'hero' setting they will end up being other than a hero. Especially if they run into one of d. trumps minions. And don't get me wrong these two have gone above and beyond in their service to this nation and our democracy. My family has had a serving member in the military since 9-10th Calvary and 24-25 Infantry(both designated Colored) early on just to make sure the "superior" race knew who was fighting and dying for an ungrateful and still virulently racist nation. And yes I served... honourably in a line of soldiers since 'Buffalo Soldier' days.
God bless them wherever god is these days.

Back to your other point, I'd like to add:
That whites can learn much from other groups, this is not a popular opinion. I posted something similar years ago and got a lot of flack for it (that's what an opinion forum is for, so that's as it should be).
This is about Indians, as from India, as well as other immigrant groups from that part of the world. It is slightly OT, but my point is that as a society we can learn from all groups and that is why a multicultural America is a strength, not a weakness or something that should be discouraged.
Here's my story, which I told once before but about 15 years ago or so.
I was in the first webmaster certification course offered in the early 90s, when the web was taking shape. I completed it and went on to conduct webmaster certification courses in other schools around NJ.
We had a good instructor in that initial certification sequence, at least I thought so. He was an amiable, friendly guy and related well to all class members. The mix of the class was about 40% Indian or Southeast Asia. Maybe 40% whites, the rest Hispanic and African American. This particular technical university is fairly prestigious and attracts students from all around the world--exceptionally bright students.
We got to the third part of the certification, which was about the back end server. The first two parts of webmaster segments I enjoyed and couldn't get enough of, but this back end stuff bored the daylights out of me. I looked around and noticed most of the other white people didn't seem to want to bother with it, either. We all tuned out.
But not those immigrant groups! On no, if they didn't get it, they hammered away at the instructor until they got a satisfactory explanation. If they didn't get it, they went to the administration and the administration made the instructor conduct additional after-class sessions. Ho-hum, I didn't attend and neither did certain other segments of the class.
My attitude was to hell with that. I don't have to work that hard to make a good living (privilege speaking here, I'm not afraid to admit). It seemed to be the attitude of certain others, too.
But back end stuff is important, so you can see why we need people tenacious enough to understand it. You and I wouldn't be posting away here now if we didn't have people trained in its operation.
No doubt things have changed a lot since then and it may not be so boring now.
To summarize my point, we all learn from each other. Why can't these RW groups understand that a multicultural society is an asset, not a threat?

(8,788 posts)Perfect point. Imagine what we could have learned from Native Americans living in harmony with nature. But American religion has taught the white race we are the chosen ones. The smartest ones, the ones HE intends to rule the world. Religious extremism world wide have each culture thinking the same. Never a part of Native Americans.
In Navy boot camp I was a poor swimmer so I was put in the Stroker company. Had to learn how to pass certification for swimmers during boot. My best friend joined with me. He pretended to be a bad swimmer so we could be in the same company. That company was full of blacks, Latinos and very many Philippinos. All had the same plan, pretend to swim bad and we stay together, although many in each race had bad swimmers that needed friends to play that game. So my white friend and my white butt in a company of 45 none whites. I grew up in rural mid North Carolina. NUff said.
I joined a few years after HS, was in a traveling band a while, so being older I was put in charge of the boot camp company, RCPO. So I quickly had to learned to accept and lead with complete fairness to all, or we would have been doing push-ups for 12 weeks and beat down. Took that lesson through my whole life, and surprise, I learned from them all, stay in touch with a few decades later. Tolerance, open minded, and humility. Did not learn in in Rural NC. It served me well my whole life. Hate my racist hometown even now. None have changed, gotten worse.
I was HS class President and Captain of Football team. Went to one reunion after 10 years and vowed to never go back. They almost convinced me to come speak at last years event. A few conversations with the committee showed me they are worse, all racists trumpers. I did not attend.
So, there is a need to experience as many cultures as you can, with humility. Or stay in your little home town bubble and rot as you are. Ignorant and missing out on life.
Thank you US Navy. Made me a much better man.

(890 posts)by circumstances beyond their control. It's shameful that they needed to be heroic, but I for one am so grateful they were.
I'm pretty sure "saving democracy" isn't in either of their job descriptions and while police officers can be expected to encounter occasions that require them to act in extraordinary ways, I would argue that the circumstances of January 6th 2021 are beyond anything even anticipated to be encountered by Capital Police officers before the events of that horrible day. The worst thing Election workers should expect to deal with is a long night counting ballots, not death threats by crazed mobs of lunatics.

(35,704 posts)thank her for her time? On the way out they all said something and a few even hugged, if I remember correctly. I know Liz Cheney gave her a hug and Jamie might have--anyone remember?
Even if it wasn't a hug, their sincerity was noted.
