(USA Today) A historic heat wave in the West was forecast to roll eastward this week after Phoenix, Las Vegas and Denver joined a plethora of cities and towns posting record temperatures and more than 50 million Americans sweltered under heat advisories.
Southerly winds will pump hot, humid air into the eastern two-thirds of the nation through Wednesday, forecaster WeatherBug warned. The result: temperatures ranging from 10 to 30 degrees above normal for this time of year.
Farther west, weekend temperatures in Californias Death Valley climbed above 120 degrees while in Phoenix, a man grilled burgers and baked a cake on his dashboard. Parts of Missouri, Kansas, Louisiana and Mississippi also saw weekend heat advisories.
Blame a northward bulge in the jet stream that unfolded over the Southwestern states this week, allowing air more typical of midsummer to spread over the region. A "drastic and intense warmup" is on tap for more of the nation this week as the jet stream lifts north, AccuWeather warned. .............(more)

(13,571 posts)windy, chilly, heavy rain here in PNW.
An "atmospheric" river of rain that has driven the river in front of my window to 2 feet below flood stage now.
And unseasonably cold. 55 degrees at 5:20 p.m.

The PNW will probably remain wet and cold.

(32,075 posts)I am in the Phoenix area and I went out for a run this morning. I also took my dogs out for their morning and afternoon walks. It was fine for both me and them.

(3,247 posts)"But it's a dry heat!" I lived in Tucson for over 10 years. I found that even during the hottest part of the day, it was tolerable as long as you weren't in direct sunlight. If the sun was beating down on you, you could feel it sapping your energy. I never understood how people could work outside in that heat in direct sunlight.

We'll probably break a record or two, or come close. It should be 80's in June here.

(25,895 posts)and utterly despise the heat there. The claim that "It's a DRY heat" is bullshit. It's still fucking hot. There is simply no relief, other than being inside in air conditioning.
Oh, and keep in mind that it barely cools down overnight. Overnight lows of 90 degrees, sometimes 100 degrees. That is hardly relief from the heat.
Of course, it's not just those two cities, but everywhere on the planet suffering from global warming.
