Los Angeles (Knewz) As recently as 2020, the Supreme Court could be considered moderate.
But in the wake of Conservatives in late 2020 moving from a 5-4 to 6-3 majority, researchers at the University of Texas at Austin found that while the court is no longer moderate, Americans for the most part still view it as such. As a result, they suggest support for changes like an increase in the number of justices is weaker than it might be if people knew how conservative the court has become.
We show that after conservatives achieved that majority, the court is ideologically closer to the conservative Republican voter, said co-author Stephen Jessee, associate professor of government. That is to the ideological right of roughly three-quarters of all Americans.
Jessee and her colleagues culled results of three separate surveys conducted in 2010, 2020 and 2021. In the last poll, 51 percent of Democratic voters and just 16 percent of Republicans supported expanding the court. On the topic of term limits, 67 percent of Democrats and 43 percent of Republicans were in favor.

(31,039 posts)I often hear Trump referred to as a populist. He never once won the popular vote. How exactly is he popular? Im starting to believe they really would rather rule from the minority then get the majority of the people on their side. Because thats the wrong people as far as theyre concerned

(21,786 posts)That way we wouldn't have this nonsense of a single appointment resulting in the overturning of established laws, legal decisions, and institutions.
Decisive changes in the Court's makeup would occur gradually, giving both Parties the opportunity to moderate it before it goes to far off track.
