(13,501 posts)It seems as though on the news stations, it's garnering attention. Even Fox (Bret Baier and John Roberts) were talking about possible reforms. (Waiting times/21 year old age limit, etc.) They may be some of the more reasonable fox hosts, so we will see what happens later. (I flipped to all three cable channels after the speech out of curiosity. The other two were all compassion.)

I mean, if he's willing AND ABLE to stomp a hole in Ted Cruz, I'm not sure I care what party he claims.

(16,513 posts)But as soon as he started to speak, comments from viewers started scrolling up one side of the screen. I couldn't see any way to turn them off, and it was incredibly distracting, especially since many were trollish sounding slams at Biden. I finally gave up trying to watch.
If anyone can tell me how to watch without that crap cluttering up the screen, please advise.

(6,105 posts)Why now? Why not when so many others have been mutilated by these weapons? What FINALLY clicked in him to go public? It's a little late, Matthew.

(2,113 posts)It's not on Matthew McConaughey, personally, to speak out. At least he is doing so now and is trying to use his celebrity to effect change. That's more than we can say about pretty much any of the Republican leaders. Blame where blame is due...

(2,113 posts)Good for him, I say. And GOOD FOR US. And if his message reaches even one person and changes even one mind, isn't that a good thing? We need to welcome people who change, or awaken, or have an epiphany... whenever it happens. We can't let perfect be the enemy of good.
Lunabell
(6,105 posts)If he and others continue to elect republicans. Period. Nothing will change.

Unless people quit voting for republicans, nothing is going to happen on real gun control. They're all bought and paid for by the nra and gun lobby. To really influence people, Matthew McConaughey should disavow any politician who doesn't support sensible gun laws. But, he won't and the carnage will continue.

(2,113 posts)We didn't get here overnight and we're not going to dig out of this overnight. None of our current situation starts or ends with Matthew McConaughey. Nor does it start or end with TFG. That asshole is just a turbo-charged symptom of their general f*ckery. Repubs have been playing the long game for decades. (At least since St. Ronnie and Newt Gingrich.) We are still playing catch-up. There are many wrongs to be righted. And if, by whatever circumstance, someone sees the light, we can't bludgeon them with past mistakes. We need to welcome them. We are going to need every voice we can get and every vote we can get.
With everything that we've been through, I feel like I'm on a mental see-saw. Some days I'm pissed off. Some days I'm weepy, discouraged and tired, (a la Eeyore). Some days I'm scared shitless. And some days I'm hopeful and scrappy. I understand everything you said and admit to feeling the same way most days. You just happened to catch me on a hopeful and scrappy day.
😉

(28,272 posts)Or are you under the impression that these slaughters have come to a screeching halt? Matt McConaughey did the gun safety movement an enormous service today. I'm damned grateful for it.

(1,000 posts)Uvalde......but Matthew McConaughey was also not so very long ago making noise about politics with a libertarian bent, possibly a successor to Abbot. I'm not saying he was Jon Voight, Chachi, or Kevin Sorbo.....but it looks like another Repub sympathizer has had an awakening. For the record, what he said made me cry. FFS are we going to have to demand crime scene photos to make some people pull their heads out of their asses? It was the same at Sandy Hook, a physician describing what that kind of round does to human body, let alone a CHILD! And it got exactly how much press, thank you NRA you soulless gutless vampires.

(10,066 posts)And that is Pete Buttigieg. He has been the only person willing to go on Fox and country their garbage in a calm, reasoned way. He served in the military and can attest first hand to seeing the damage the military assault weapons do to the human body. He does not set off all the conservative alarm bells that some other well known Democrats do, such as Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders.
I know he already has a job, but I believe Biden could find someone else for Transportation and create a special role for Pete. Not only would he be excellent in tackling the need for gun regulation, he would also be able to take about all the things the Biden administration has achieved that the media totally ignores.
That might seem like a step down for him, but we desperately need a person with charisma and the ability to address many different topics coherently and with authority. The DNC is useless for this purpose. All they do is send emails to raise money and then parcel it out to candidates.
The only other option is Biden, and he has enough to do. The VP might be an option, but she too has a bigger job.

(32,731 posts)individuals I've ever seen. You're right. He shouldn't be tucked away the way he has been.

(10,066 posts)Another point Pete has going for him in the gun debate especially is that he has children. They arent school age yet, but he can relate to parents in their fear for their children.
What is a new role and title for Pete that would allow him to take on the public challenges and basically force the media to provide better coverage? Special Advisor to the President sounds a bit wishy washy.

(42,770 posts)As much as I love Beto, I wonder if maybe it was a better time for McConaughey to run for governor. Watching him he seems to have more of a twang and since he's got the gun background, it seems like his approach is more like he's one of them? I know, too late, and will work for Beto again for sure. Did you last time in SA?

(42,770 posts)think, maybe it just could be a place that needs a manchin-esque type. Like way too much of a leap from lunatic wingnut to liberal Dem? Of course we want TX to be liberal but approach it incrementally?
