"Duck and Cover"

In the 1950's, school children were taught that in response to a nuclear attack, they were to get under their desks, (duck), and protect their heads with their hands and arms, (cover).

Now, the NRA and GOP has told us that the way to protect children from being murdered is to arm teachers. Do you suppose this will be as effective as "duck and cover?"

America has been run off the rails by a minority of people who are ignorant enough to buy everything the GOP sells them. And the Republicans get away with it because they own the hugest propaganda machine in the history of the world, which they use to peddle the most incredible bullshit imaginable. (How long before they question the existence of gravity?)

So are we going to counter them with "Duck and Cover," or "Arm Teachers" bumper stickers? Or, will we somehow, someway, stand the fuck up, face the crazies of the Republican Party, (along with those who bought and paid for them), and put an end to the insanity.

I was in elementary school in the late 50s--A student in the row closest the windows was instructed to close them and draw the blinds against the blinding flash, as all proceeded in an orderly fashion into the concrete block hallway where we were to crouch down with hands holding and covering the back of our necks, elbows down facing the walls against the concussive impact of THE BOMB. Only a couple drills over the 7 years of K-6 school. Sixty years later, as a townhouse renter, I still figure I'm screwed by a direct hit or a gone-er of any nearby (250m or less) nuclear event (and I'd actually prefer ground zero mega-ton vaporization) let alone be a longer-term survivior of radiation fallout.

For tornado drills we were instructed to merely file out and stand with our backs to the concrete walls and close/cover our faces. A few drills yearly, usually in weather safety month; never had an actual event. Now, practice best recommended practices at home or work at the sound of the sirens; inside room away from windows with pets, radio, flashlight, go-bag, etc...

Both preventions then were jokes...either way, blown away with life-changing circumstances in an actual event...I never really expect to survive either actual incident now...I watched those films at 11 and now follow the storm-chasers!

Fire drills - file quietly outdoors to the assigned spot on the campus. Common sense rules!

Active shooter drills? NEVER K-12 because that was incomprehensible!
