DeSantis signs bill mandating communism lessons in class, as GOP leans on education

Public school teachers in Florida will soon be required to dedicate at least 45 minutes of instruction on “Victims of Communism Day” to teach students about communist leaders around the world and how people suffered under those regimes.

Speaking at Miami’s Freedom Tower before a crowd of local lawmakers and supporters, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed House Bill 395, which designates Nov. 7 as the state’s official “Victims of Communism Day,” making Florida one of a handful of states to adopt the designation.

It is, however, the first state to mandate school instruction on that day, as Florida Republicans continue to seize on education policy while placing school curriculum at the forefront of their political priorities ahead of the 2022 midterms.

The bill, which DeSantis signed along with two street designations in honor of Cuban exiles, would require the instruction to begin in the 2023-2024 school year. It would require teaching of Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong and Fidel Castro, as well as “poverty, starvation, migration, systemic lethal violence, and suppression of speech” endured under those regimes.

Did the Russians train the Republicans on how to implement MANDATORY INDOCTRINATION?

4. And in typical republican response, State Senator Manny Diaz said

Ibarra, president of Miami Young Republicans and founder of the Florida Commission of Victims of Communism. ... developed its own curriculum, one of the materials on which the State Board of Education would model its own lessons, said Miami Sen. Manny Diaz, who was appointed last week as the state’s new Education Commissioner.

“We haven’t reviewed it, but the things set forth in the bill have to be taught,” said Diaz.

Nothing to see here. The requirements will not include exposing the republican's attempt to overthrow our government on January 6th, the individuals and corporations responsible, or how socialism works either. The Supreme Court's exertion of absolute control over personal choices in education, religion, employment, and marriage will also be avoided. Yay Florida.

it's an economic principle. All that crackdown on freedoms is related to social injustice.

Or do I have that wrong?

I wonder if it would be required to teach the reasoning behind Florida HB1?

Or the union busting tactics of the "men who made Murika"

7. This bill is just like what communist countries taught about America during the cold war

Communist countries often taught American history in class to demonstrate why "capitalism" was wrong. What negative historical events could they possibly teach: poverty, starvation, systemic violence, and suppression of speech. Often targeted at segregation, racism, and slavery, but not exclusive of that. Being poor in America was and is not fun. It's not like it was hard for them to find examples. A smart teacher should show what communism taught about us for 45 minutes. It might be a real eye opener.

Any normal history class will provide ample historical context of how awful Stalin or Zedong were. However, they should also learn about how awful segregation, slavery, and racism were and still are too.

A number of students at those schools will develop an affinity for communism, either by critical thinking or out-and-out rebellion.

Thanks for nothing, DeSantis.

They really don't have a clue outside their bubble of stupid.
This is going to backfire so badly.
Republicans can't tell the differences between Social Democracy, Democratic Socialism, Socialism, and Communism.
And they're so out of touch that they don't realize that young people prefer leftist ideologies to Capitalism. Hell, I prefer leftist ideologies to Capitalism and I'm a Gen X'er!

What you're witnessing here is straight out of the far right playbook rooted in white supremacy, fascism, and nationalism.
This is ripped out of the Hitler Youth playbook where kids were taught, forcibly, wait for it, "the evils of Socialism & Communism".
