This SCOTUS decision will turn out to be a good thing.

I predict it will galvanize democratic, independents and many conservatives. Once people realize that congress has the power to pass laws that can insure a woman's right to choose it will make a huge difference in the elections.

I believe if the court tries to overturn gay marriage it will adversely effect the republicans as well.

Abortion is overwhelmingly supported by the American people and gay marriage is strongly supported in every poll. The court is to the right of most of the people in this country and it will end up costing the repugs.

that did that.

And once you make this about legislation, all you are doing is setting up for a yo yo effect as each party gains temporary control.

Voters have short memories and attention spans. Republicans won't be out of power for eternity.

The courts laying down the law was always preferred because that's much harder to overturn. As you can see it took them over 40 years to do it.

it can be a huge advantage for dems in future elections. Some voters have short memories. I doubt women will on this issue.

Courts change as well, but in the meantime legislation is the answer.

...and which way do you think this court will vote?

Sorry brother, but you need a civics lesson. This court can and probably will immediately strike down any pro-choice federal legislation before the ink is dry. Google the Line Item Veto Act under Clinton. It's called Judicial Activism, and that pendulum has swayed both ways. Repukes have learned "If you own the Courts, you truly make the laws".

It's like Ukraine. In the long run, NATO likely be strengthened and Russia will be weaker but I am pretty sure most Ukrainians aren't thinking about that at the moment.

that dark, dark cloud is just the beginning. People can keep their rights now by simply voting to protect them, most by mail, but not enough are concerned. Once they allowed them to be taken away,... Katie needn't bother barring the door; in this era there'd be nowhere to hide.

If what you described happens, the SCOTUS striking down Roe will still be a bad thing. If it turns out to be a bad thing that leads to some good things, that will be great. But no matter what happens, it'll still be a bad thing.

Depends on how you look at it, maybe.

We'd need 38 states to ratify. Right now 30 out of 50 states are dominated by a Republican Governor and Republican-majority legislature.

We are going to be in a decades-long struggle to overcome what SCOTUS does on Roe v. Wade.

so the struggle is ongoing to prevent that from happening.

For the midterms, but you still would have May-January at a minimum of the laws flying through red state legislatures. And even if the midterms produce the needed votes to pass national legislation, the states will sue and it will end up at SCOTUS again, likely with the same outcome. It sucks, but the long term goal has to be keeping the presidency in 2024 to prevent national legislation outlawing it and eventually Thomas is going to go one way or the other.

That sort of stupid ass accelerationist thinking is what led to this problem to begin with.

Funny how the "the good isn't good enough, we need perfect" crowd are also the same ones that are perfectly fine with absolute evil winning because they somehow think that will enable good to win later on rather than just enabling a lot of fucking evil things.
