"The whole purpose of "occupying" is to be visible and thereby create friction, disruption, and inconvenience, interfering with business, slowing or bringing activity to a halt. Without causing as much chaos as possible -- peaceful though it may be -- there is no point in occupying. (There is a reason sit-down strikes are illegal for labor unions, but I expect to see Occupiers try it.) When mayors and city halls offer alternative sites for the Occupiers in order to reduce the dangers of disruption -- and police intervention -- it shows clearly that the authorities do recognize that the purpose of the occupations is to create disturbance. -

"Don't watch the polls. Ignore them. You're not running for political office. Your task is to arouse this country of ours, bring us to our senses, create a groundswell, the political pressure that demands from our president and the members we elected to Congress that they focus on the problems that are plaguing us, and then act on them.'

If just one person offers something as an opinion, that's one thing, but the whole group is saying almost the same thing, word for word, you know it is a talking point.

We need a strategy to deal with this. They have their media plants, even on the left, to do this kind of dirty work.

I think the best thing to do is to probably let those 'omg, OWS is dead' posts sink.

At the beginning of the movement the organizers dealt with this when they were talking about how to handle the media. Everyone knew the media would be against them, corporate tool that it is. The consensus was not to engage them, to just keep moving ahead, to ignore them.

It's obvious that a vast majority here do support the movement, so it's probably best to let them talk to themselves and keep moving forward.

But that's not enough. The only things I see that will have a lasting effect are political involvement or armed insurrection.

And I don't think armed insurrection is in enough people's minds to warrant it as doable.

If we want to change the laws, we need to focus on the people who make those laws, who are also the ones who put us in this rotten economic mess -Congress.

If you're giving up on both political change and armed insurrection, then you are giving up, IMO.

The idea of armed insurrection is absurd, not only would lots of innocent people die but we would be up against the most powerful military in the history of the world and we would be crushed in no time. The best way to fight back is through non-violent disobedience, it worked for Gandhi and it can work for us. Buying into their broken system which has us choose between two corporate funded candidates has not worked and it is time to admit the Democratic Party has been part of the problem and not part of the solution.

But absent a third party play, the only alternatives that I see are working with the existing Democrats or starting an armed insurrection.

Apparently, you need to catch up.

First of all, non-violent protest IS effective (review the myriad history books about Gandhi and Satyagraha).

Non-violent protest requires a great deal of courage and conviction, so condescension about #Occupy says more about the source than the movement.

Second, #Occupy has already passed the 'tens of thousands' mark. This is a global initiative.

Voter drives are great. Interrupting West Coast port operations are pointless. How many Mom-and-Pop stores were inconvenienced by that, I wonder?

A lot of time was wasted on park sit-ins and hunger strikes and other stuff.

You have been pissing on OWS for quite a long time, it's always the same tired and worn "arguments", what OWS is "about" has already been explained to you personally more than once, and yet still you persist and still you ask the same asked-and-answered questions as the other ten or so people on DU who are all doing the same thing. You- the personal "you", not the editorial one- are and have been plaintively asking the same questions over and over in every single OWS thread you post in, even though it has all been explained to you over and over and over again, spreading fear, uncertainty, and doubt- FUD- the entire time, with every OWS post you write.

That you would so stupidly post what you did at the start of this subthread absolutely reeks of Republican. That's what they do- accuse others, usually the other side politically, of doing what they, Republicans, are doing themselves.

That opening salvo was, in short, a breathtakingly hypocritical thing for you to post.

Shame on you.

Wed Dec 14, 2011, 11:39 PM

buy their own gas, and if they complain, are fired, as many of them were, by Goldman Sachs who reaps millions of dollars from their labor.

Maybe you didn't understand what this was all about, but the truckers and the Longshoremen have been battling for their livelihoods for more than six months as these Multi-National Corporations tried to smash their unions and hired cheap labor in their place, locking them out, while scabs crossed their picket lines, long before OWS existed.

Anyone who really cares about the workers would be cheering that finally they got some help. Because that is what OWS was doing. Trying to help American workers whose livelihoods were threatened by Multi National Mega Corporations, who, as soon as they got control of OUR docks, made lowering the wages of Americans who for generations made their living from those docks, their number one priority.

How many Americans even knew of their struggle to try to preserve their way of life, until Occupy Oakland shut down the bullies in early November and came to the aid of their fellow Americans?

Listen to the tearful and emotional 'thank you' from the ILWU leader to Occupy Oakland for laying their own freedom on the line to help them in their struggle.

The only people who oppose the assistance given to the long-struggling truckers and Longshoremen against Goldman Sachs and EGT, are supporters of the corrupt, unregulated Capitalist system that has collapsed the world's economy and destroyed the livelihoods of the middle class.

But no one in the real world could possibly say that shutting down operations that are pouring money into the coffers of the top 1% while taking it from ordinary workers, was anything BUT a good thing.

Now, let's see how arrogant they will be the next time workers demand what is rightfully theirs. Now they know they won't just be dealing with the workers, they will be dealing with the American people willing to come out and help their fellow citizens who are being victimized by these greedy Corporations.

Am I the only one here who is annoyed by the arrogance of that kind of statement?

Seriously, just about every paragraph in the above posting begins with a haughty dismissal of any other viewpoint being anti-worker, or suspiciously aligned with the view of the 1%.

As in:

"Anyone who really cares about the workers..." would of course agree with the poster.

And "The only people who oppose the assistance given..." are, of course, secret shills and/or dupes for the 1%.

Or: "no one in the real world could possibly say..." anything that disputes my opinion without revealing themselves to be some combination of stupid, lacking in understanding, a dupe, or a secret shill for evil people.

Really, if anyone has a point to make, please argue it, but the constant claims to superior knowledge and understanding I see in discussions here are annoying and insulting.

A man goes to a well-respected psychiatrist and asks to be cured of his inferiority complex.

The doctor listens to the man's story - a long, sad story about how the man's colleagues at work constantly ignore his brilliant suggestions and arrogantly dismiss his best efforts at making a meaningful contribution.

After pondering the man's plight in silence for a few minutes, the psychiatrist sighs and says, "I am very sorry, but I can't help you. You ARE inferior."

If it's arrogant to provide facts to someone who obviously doesn't have them, then so be it. Personally I like to be informed when I am ignorant of the facts.

My view is, it is extremely arrogant to make declarations as IF they were facts and try to shut down and dismiss those who have actually taken the time to get those facts.

I could ask questions too. Such as, has anyone noticed the tolerance for the spreading of false information about OWS here, and the intolerance of anyone who corrects it?

...to convince themselves they are relevant (when no one is saying they are not), I think a diagnosis of self-doubt is correct.

This reminds me of when Republicans say they are 'pro-Life' and therefore imply that everyone else is 'pro-Abortion'.

Most people on DU support OWS so it's a silly excuse for a poll.

Whatever else you think it's about, it's in your imagination. No one is "working hard" here, the OP was checking to see if the threads from the last few days have much support or if it's just a few blowhard keyboard commando's who like to sit on the sidelines and tell everyone how poorly they are doing.

One of the FEW. Your hypocrisy in this post is utterly breathtaking.

DU members have been waiting for, watching for, and asking why the absence of an American street uprising for more than ten years now. In France, thy shut down the country. In Egypt and elsewhere, the people rose violently. The American version of the same action- and it is all the same action, using different methods depending on the nation in question- has arrived with the advent of OWS.

And here you are, with each and every last action taken by OWS and its activists, pissing on the movement, its goals, and its individual members every chance you get.

YOU ARE A HYPOCRITE, randome. A hypocrite of the Republican kind.

But it has to move on from OWS to occupy in different ways. It can stay *more* visible by devising educational political theater that lasts a day or a weekend. Weekend after weekend. Occupy K Street was a beginning--this needs to evolve. Occupy Fox needs to happen soon.

Blocking Ports is probably not the best PR for a movement of working people because it also hurts too many of us. Occupy Walmart instead.

If we really want to support Occupy then we should kick and recommend the posts that help educate people about what is happening with Occupy instead so more people see those posts.

I support all the Occupy movements. They have an uphill battle; but, they've already changed the nature of public discourse.

That discourse has been dragged so far to the right since Reagan that a relatively moderate Liberal stand is seen as 'extreme.' I think Occupy is dragging it back toward the Left, bit by bit.
