Police nab fox on Capitol Hill after attack on Democratic congressman and other 'encounters'

Authorities nabbed a fox on the Capitol grounds Tuesday after a member of Congress reported being attacked the previous day.

U.S. Capitol Police said D.C. Animal Control had captured a fox after receiving "several reports of aggressive fox encounters on or near the grounds of the U.S. Capitol."

Roughly six people recently reported bites or nips, according to Capitol Police.

Among those who had an unpleasant encounter was Rep. Ami Bera, D-Calif., who was nipped on his leg on his way to the office Monday, his communications director, Travis Horne said.

that wasn't extremely shy. They will run away if it even seems you are moving in their direction.

Once, a fox was trotting down the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street from me. As it approached, it never took its eyes off me and my dog. Continued to look back at us after passing.

For one to be aggressive like that, I think you're right. It may be protecting its babies or something

They really do have to test for rabies, especially since this fox wasn't behaving normally.

if the animal is caught and can be kept quarantined for 10 days without showing symptoms of rabies, there is no need for humans to have to undergo the shots or the animal to be killed.

The fox was acting like a protective mother. Without the babies, then maybe rabies would be the first thing to check for.

She wasn't foaming at the mouth, or rabidly aggressive, just protective from anything approaching her den.

Skunks, raccoons, foxes and bats that bite humans should be euthanized and tested as soon as possible. The length of time between rabies virus appearing in the saliva and onset of symptoms is unknown for these animals and holding them for observation is not acceptable.

I was just thinking certain people were probably too impatient to wait the 10 days.

It is not normal for a mother fox to run out and bite someone walking by. If that were normal there would be thousands of fox bites every spring, and that just doesn't happen. And this fox has done it again and again.

Do you know what does cause a fox to run out and bite people? Rabies.
