Attention Parents! 🚨
A teacher in Palm Beach County, FL shared this template with us. It is being shared among teachers to use for grades K-3.
How do you feel about this? What will you do when this arrives home in your childs backpack?
Time to take a Stand.
They didnt expect this because they just assumed that the law would be interpreted in a way that favors them rather than by the literal text of the law which, if it doesnt explicitly require this, at least encourages this by being intentionally vague.
And judges may well interpret the law that way. If someone brought a lawsuit because a straight teacher made reference to their spouse, it may well go nowhere. Jim Crow laws were facially race neutral as well. But until the courts clear this up better to be safe than sorry!

(19,259 posts)say "who are in heaven", but I had to go through a year's worth of Lutheran confirmation classes, and we learned "art in heaven".
That was the end of my religious indoctrination, and I only did that to please my parents.
Don't feel bad. Sometimes I get totally perplexed by something someone writes on DU, and I'll obsess about it until I remember something or look it up. I can't leave something dangling, it drives me nuts (but at least it's a short drive).

(5,995 posts)Just to avoid any gender specific stereotypes, and any inferences kids can draw from that.
Baggy jeans, baggy tops, trainers for shoes, mid length neutral hair styles, no makeup, and girls - lower the pitch of your voice - guys, do the opposite!
Aww, this could be fun!
Parent to kid: Who is your teacher this year?
Kid: Goes by the name of 'teacher number 231' and no other, no idea if male or female though. I've asked, but it's a taboo topic it seems.
Parent (squinty, suspicious eyes): Keep an eye open. See which staff toilet they go into.
Kid (sad eyes): Liked Miss Smith last year more. She smiled a lot! This one doesn't.

(4,557 posts)It says to contact your congress person.
Its not the U.S. Congress that passed that law, it is the State Legislature of Florida. State Reps and State Senators are who can do something, not their Congressperson.

(34,571 posts)The law states: "Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards." Parents would be able to sue districts over violations.

i guess i'm too old and all this is just beyond me & my comprehension. do they mean "instruction" or "discussion?" if a 5 yr old talks about her mom and mommy is she shut down, told we don't talk about that, or sent to the office?
and i didn't realize they instructed kids on gender identity/sex. orientation.
i don't recall any of this hoopla when my daughter was in school.
