(8,267 posts)but aren't really Russians at heart, but instead acting like westerners, and how Russia needs to undergo "purification"--sounds to me like pressure from oligarchs and cronies is starting to get to him, and now he's going to punish them or something. It's a scary speech.

(20,119 posts)He's saying "cancel" and "woke" over and over making it clear to everyone who he supports in the US. And maybe also making some of those people who also whine about woke and cancel culture see how idiotic it makes them look.

(11,767 posts)The analogy you are looking for is...
When you have an aggressive, rabid dog, and that dog is attacking a child, you will try to hose, hit, kick, and maybe eventually use more severe methods of getting the attack to stop.
This is what is happening to you Putin.

(33,945 posts)out of the Russian Empire. Russia was dismembered by Russians.
I know it galls him, but there are distinct ethnicities that were made Republics by the Bolsheviks, and it's only natural that they'd want to escape Russian oppression, particularly that of Putin's Kakistocracy, and establish real independence. That there are many ethnic Russians in those nations just shows how Russia tried to erase their identities with Russian emigration (and relocation).
No one is trying to change the borders of Russia - it's Russia asserting that it's borders are drawn wrong.

(33,945 posts)The borders under the Tsar are the correct borders of Russia.
Of course, that's impossible now, and I think he knows it. He won't get the already-in-NATO Baltics back, for one.
I don't think he actually wants the Central Asian nations - too Muslim.
The Caucasus, though? Maybe.
Belarus? Definitely.
