Sometimes a guy beats up his wife then goes out and buys her gifts. Maybe Putin will try that tactic too.

It worked in Georgia. It worked in Crimea. Will it work here? Honestly, it he halted now and consolidated control of the territory he holds, I bet it would work. If he overplays his hand? Hard to say. But honestly, we already see resistance to Russian economic isolation.

(17,023 posts)bombing civilians. Unlike Crimea this invasion is being broadcast in real time everywhere. This isnt being seen as a one off but as a world wide slide into fascism. I think this will fall under the 3 strikes youre out rule. Bipartisan support for blocking Russian oil and gas shows strong support for Russian economic isolation.

(7,454 posts)But I have a feeling we are just condemning thousands of Ukrainians to die.
It's a tough situation.
Europe needs to ban Russian Energy imports. It'll be painful, but energy is Russia's primary income source.
MarineCombatEngineer
(12,462 posts)and you are correct, many thousands of Ukrainians will die, direct combat with Russian forces will result, IMO, in many more millions of deaths.
I couldn't agree with you more.

(17,023 posts)When has a country closed its stock market in response to them? Countries, even Russia, are much more interdependent than they were decades ago. If the sanctions werent working there wouldnt be any talk out of Moscow about negotiations.
