https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/594196-manchin-would-oppose-on-second-supreme-court-nominee-right-before-midterms?userid=740049Centrist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) told reporters Monday that he would not support confirming another nominee to the Supreme Court right before the midterm elections and would prefer to wait until the country knows which party will control the Senate in 2023.
Manchin told reporters that if another Supreme Court seat becomes vacant shortly before the Nov. 8 election, he would support holding off a vote on President Bidens nominee to see if Republicans win back control of the Senate.
Im not going to be hypocritical on that. If it comes a week or two weeks before like it did with our last Supreme Court nominee, I think thats a time it should go to the next election, he said.
So it's not just presidential elections that justify blocking court nominations ala mcconnell. It's midterms too in the manchin doctrine.

The list of things we have to lose keep shrinking.

(4,999 posts)Expel Manchin -- and then we have Majority Leader McConnell? R's in solid control of everything in the Senate? Definitely worse situation than we have now.
I vote to keep Manchin as a D, and work hard to get a progressive D in W. Va or other states where we can make progress.

(18,143 posts)Biden and Senate Democrats have confirmed more judges than any president ever, in a first year.
If McConnell was in charge, as you apparently support, that number would have been zero.

I also don't think he would be the only one in such a case. That being said, there can be a lot of room for what "shortly" means.

I'm betting he has all kinds of concerns about the "qualifications" of any Black woman who is nominated as well.
