They make it sound like a Friday report from Durham indicates Hillary was running White House servers in 2016.
What's the story?

(32,088 posts)Not just his document theft, either. Given how McConnell and others are trying to distance themselves from Trump, and condemning the Jan. 6 insurrection, it looks like they know something really big is about to drop that won't be favorable to Trump or the GOP. Trump's propaganda channel is doing everything they can to head things off before it comes to light.

(11,645 posts)Wait, so Trump did something like what we accused HRC of doing in 2016 and based our entire platform on, only Trump's offense was several orders of magnitude worse?? Shit! Someone hurry up and ratchet up the buttery males nonsense!

(2,258 posts)True...no previous offenses by any President or high ranking public official comes close to Trump's despotism. He has broken every norm, every standard and numerous laws.

(11,645 posts)...snatching boxes full of classified documents from the whitehouse and leaving them lying around the mansion at maralago for a year as compared to examining thousands of emails of which 4 contained classified designations which were mismarked. If you include all of his other illegal shit then its not even a fair fight...

(19,359 posts)It's blowing up at the NY Post and Fox.
It does sound like they know something big against Trump is about to drop.
So we need credible sources to deal with this to show this for whatever it is.

(58,785 posts)to distract from the pileup on the right. It is fascinating to see how hot and useful unresolved Hillary derangement still burns, though.
Just visited a radical left board a bunch of anyone-but-Hillary DUers fled to to see what they're saying, and it's far calmer. The Hillary coals still banked. Yes, she Obama, and Biden still all want to burn AND blow up the world (Kuwait's presumably amped up the anxiety), but not before they (finally!) succeed in destroying Social Security for their corporate bosses. A couple less deluded voices on the latter were nice to see. There are real differences between LW extremists and RW, as long as they remain separate. No idea how many members spend more time on currently raging populist sites, though.

Because, generally speaking, I can't monitor your DNS traffic. No?

(38,016 posts)It says right in the article you posted that DNS queries are not encrypted. Anyone with a tool can do it.

Sure, I'll take a shot here. There's no "infiltrating" or "spying." It's all just dumb and sensational.
1. DNS traffic records are lookups and responses. They are not confidential. There's no "infiltrating" going on here. In fact, Joffe's company (Neustar) ran a huge DNS resolver.
2. DNS servers and load balancers change DNS information, or return different answers to the same query, all the time. This is normal behavior, just to head off the "queries were changed" BS.
3. Infosec monitors DNS lookups all the time for evidence of attempted attacks and misuse. There's nothing unusual about that. This is basic data mining and aggregation.
4. DNS monitoring as a service is a very popular business; a large number of companies engage with it as part of their infosec activities.
5. Joffe's company was hired to monitor DNS traffic as part of a contract, and had been doing so for the government since at least 2014. This is legal.
6. Neustar had multiple contracts with the federal government, including one to provide DNS service. It's right there in Durham's statement. Together with its other business, it had the data, so no "spying."

(3,433 posts)1) the tweets and other liked articles helped answer my question
2) I'm not sure our prior discussion was accruate, so to clarify...
3) you and I *cannot* lookup DNS activity of Trump tower or the White House... That's not how DNS lookups work. We can only directly learn of our own DNS activity, not 3rd parties. (Which was my question and confusion). But...
4) there are many firms who can do this because those firms operate the dns servers and thus, also own the logs of all of the traffic, which itself is unencrypted (at you pointed out). And....
5) they sell this data as a data service for use in these types of internet traffic investigations.
I admit I got info wrong in my response.

TLDR; Durham is acting as a political operative, legally leaking details that the GOP can spin into a frenzy.

(145,554 posts)I read the Durham filing last night and was amused. There is nothing in this filing that proves anything.
I was amused to find this thread on Durham's latest nothingburger
