While rural's rate of vaccination is low, they have no ICU beds.

So, they never had an overabundance of beds to start out with. An hours drive (and often more than that) is commonplace for many for serious medical care (specialist, procedures, etc.) - and has been for ages.
(one also ought to keep in mind that anything with less that 200 thousand - and three hospitals - which describes almost everything west of the Alleghenies - is 'rural' in much of the media lexicon.)
All of which takes nothing away from this discussion. --- ---

Hospital serves 6 counties. 40% vaccination rate.
Masks? We don't wear no stinking masks. 75% Trump voters in 2020.
