I woke with a heavy heart today, the day we celebrate Reverend Martin Luther King and his life's work to make our country a better place for all its citizens. It seems, as a country, we have taken a huge step backward. I feel as if I am living in a fever-dream of white racist America of the 1940s and 1950s.
I am weary of the fight against these corrupt, selfish, racist people permeating our federal and local governments and our very lives. But we can't afford to be weary or disheartened. We must continue, each in our own small way, to fight this crazed madness known as "Make America Great Again", code for make America White and racist again.
I am weary, but I have hope. I have hope that the goodness and decency of Joe Biden will win over the corrupt, moral debasement of The Former Guy. I have hope that the Jan 6 Committee's public hearings will shock the American people into action against these forces of evil. I have hope that Merrick Garland and the DOJ will continue to bring down these fascists who want to remake America and the hope she has offered to so many, and turn her into a dark and dangerous place. I have hope.

(818 posts)But it will take more than "hope" to win the battle against the Neo-fascists that are working hard every single day to destroy our democracy. We need to know our enemy well, and we need to have a battle plan.
We cannot simply rely on our elected representatives to carry the load on the front lines. Every single citizen needs to do their civic duty not only by voting, but by participating in local and regional politics, by putting their feet on the street in protest when needed, and by flexing the power of their dollars via the boycott of fascist institutions and by the support of the campaigns that have the greatest impact.
Point is we are all responsible for how we got into this situation. It will take more than speeches and more than our words on an Internet message board to win this war.
