If the U.S.A. loses it's democracy to an oligarchy or autocracy, the world will likely lose all democracies, and in my opinion the risk for nuclear war increases because a strategic counter-balance is lost in two significant ways:
1. The greatest nuclear powers are Russia, U.S.A., China
2. The greatest military powers are U.S.A., Russia, China

I have no answers to how we save our democracy except to make our voices heard in as many ways as we can, to research and donate to democratic candidates (no former Green Party candidates, please), and to VOTE while we can. I hope that together with President Biden, the Democrats in Congress, the Jan 6 Committee, and the DOJ, we can fire people up to make our voices heard. If we can't or won't, I fear not just our country, but the world may be doomed.
Keep The Faith and VOTE!

China still needs US revenue to fund its goal of being a superpower.
Russia doesn't want retaliation.
I think that right now our biggest threat comes from within.

(55,327 posts)It is going to be a bumpy ride because great countries are losing power as we speak, and rising powers are gaining.
So it would be foolish for anyone to wind down nuclear programs right now. Power shifting is an uncertain time.
Whether the US loses its democracy or not, we are greatly weakened.
We don't seem to care about our own democratic system, therefore it is hard for us to argue the case for democracy abroad. We are bogged down in endless internal conflict and seem to be ungovernable. We alternate between bad and good presidents, so we are not trustworthy or stable in the eyes of the world. How does this make American democracy look to the world as a form of government?
Of course our enemies will move in and grab power and prestige. China will step up to the plate and show the world what can be achieved by autocracy.
Russia is flexing muscles as well.
The sound we hear are tectonic plates shifting beneath us.

(4,592 posts)war with China seems inevitable, as they are seen as the enemy, not Russia. It'll start with the US defaulting on Chinese-owned debt.

(55,327 posts)The GOP wants to default on the China debt, but that move would adversely impact America's economy and world standing.

(4,592 posts)about the effects of default on the US. Russia and China are allies of the moment. Once Putin can use the US to strike at China, he will.

(55,327 posts)They will figure out a way to make a lot of money on a default.
I also agree that the Russia/China alliance is an uneasy one.
They could turn on each other at any moment.
But Putin would be foolish to attack China.

(4,592 posts)which makes controlling the US all the more useful to his plans. Seriously, he had de facto control for 4 years, and now seeks to regain it.

(55,327 posts)Yes he lost the WH, but Congress, Supreme Court and the media seem to follow Russian talking points.
Theoretically Dems have control of the Congress, but the senate marches to McConnell's orders. And we know where McConnell gets some of his orders.

(15,695 posts)if the USA becomes an autocracy/oligarchy operating in a similar way of past and current anti-democracy countries, the balance of power in the world, primarily evidenced by military and nuclear might, changes the paradigm in the world. People don't give up their democracy, it is taken from them. If it can happen in the USA, it can happen anywhere. Iceland would have no chance against an autocratic Russia, China and the USA. What happens here in the next two/four years will affect, adversely I fear, the entire world, particularly the democracies of the world.
