Anyway, having recently arrived at membership status, I find myself on many occasions clicking on a poster's name to get a feel for who the person is that is making these comments. Are they male, female, young, old, where they live? And generally what I find is NOTHING. I'm not looking for height, weight, bra size, etc., but why don't more DU's give out information as to who they are?

(146,308 posts)anonymity, and that's OK on DU. Others don't mind if you know who they are. It's a choice. You can make your own choice about your own identity. That's a good thing.

(17,742 posts)#2, once you've been around long enough, you get to know something about posters, even if they don't provide it in their profile. In other words, it's not spoon fed all in one place, it's knowledge that is gained from months and years of reading opinions and reading between lines.

(12,448 posts)are pathologically paranoid. DU attracts a disproportionate number of Reich-wing posters and PINOs (progressives in name only). A few people have made too much personal information available and been harassed and stalked.
Ironically, many of those that do not make things as innocuous as sex and city available reveal through their posts enough information that a determined stalker could probably find out exactly who they are.
