Opinion: Donald Trump's influence is fading

Rachel discussed this earlier this week. TFG is losing his control over the GOP and his nut case supporters

On both counts, Trump's stunt suggests a man operating not from a place of confidence and strength, but of anxiety and confusion. Anyone following the House select committee on January 6 would understand why. News from the committee indicates they are focused on Trump and his inner circle, with the possibility they could make criminal referrals to the Justice Department, sources told CNN. In the meantime, key figures like rally organizer Ali Alexander are cooperating with the committee.

It's clear the former President wants to shore up his standing within the party -- but taking in his efforts to stay relevant in the last year, it's safe to say his power is limited. Sure, Trump has played an outsized role in shaping the GOP; his lies about election fraud have taken hold within the party, Republican-controlled states have passed a number of voter restriction laws and he's ushered in an era of increasing extremism. But now that he no longer holds the highest office in the land, Trump himself is far from the kingmaker he wants to be.

Looking back on the year, Trump's attempts to wield his power over the GOP have been spotty. State-level attempts to overturn the 2020 election results have all failed, and when the former president pushed the governor of Texas to advance election audit legislation, it went nowhere. Meanwhile, his hand-picked candidate for the US Senate seat in Pennsylvania suspended his campaign amid allegations of domestic abuse. And in Alabama, his support for Senate candidate Mo Brooks appears to be having little effect (you may recall that Trump's weakness showed in Alabama in 2017 when his picks for US Senate lost both in the primary and general election.)

Other Trump setbacks include the failure of his endorsed candidate in a special Congressional election in Texas. And those who are waging primary battles against incumbent Republicans who voted to impeach Trump after the January 6 insurrection are struggling with fundraising. In the most glaring example, January 6 committee member Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming -- a Republican who may top the list of Trump's enemies -- has 10 times more campaign cash than her Trump-endorsed challenger, according to the most recent Federal Election Commission filings from October.

In Washington, DC, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the most powerful Republican in office, seems to be distancing himself from Trump. He recently expressed interest in the January 6 committee's effort to "reveal all of the participants who were involved," and added, "It was a horrendous event, and I think what they are seeking to find out is something the public needs to know."

Because the best thing we can hope for is a bitter GOP civil war in 2023 that splits the party in the 2024 election. Let him, Cruz, and DeSantis get bloody fighting each other and alienate each other's bases.

First I followed MSN's link to the Trump page and it no longer contains the statement.

The page you requested could not be found.
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

https://www.donaldjtrump.com/news/news-gnhfuzkqvk1299

But it lives forever on the web. Here it is, in all its incoherent stupidity. (I'm sure Mitch McConnell loves the slams against RINO's.)

Trump’s Full Statement:

Why isn’t the Unselect Committee of highly partisan political hacks investigating the CAUSE of the January 6th protest, which was the rigged Presidential Election of 2020? Does anybody notice that they want to stay as far away from that topic as possible, the numbers don’t work for them, or even come close. The only thing they can do is not talk about it. Look at what is going on now in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Georgia, Wisconsin, and, to a lesser extent, Michigan where the numbers are horrendously corrupt in Detroit, but the weak Republican RINOs in the Michigan House and Senate don’t want to touch the subject. In many ways a RINO is worse than a Radical Left Democrat, because you don’t know where they are coming from and you have no idea how bad they really are for our Country. The good news is there are fewer and fewer RINOs left as we elect strong Patriots who love America. I will be having a news conference on January 6th at Mar-a-Lago to discuss all of these points, and more. Until then, remember, the insurrection took place on November 3rd, it was the completely unarmed protest of the rigged election that took place on January 6th.

The comments angered many of Trump's biggest supporters online, sending alternative social media networks like Telegram and Gab into a frenzy. Prominent conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and "Stop the Steal" organizer Ali Alexander led the charge against Trump, denouncing the twice-impeached former president for the comments.

"Trump, stop. Just stop. Have your position (backed by Fauci) and allow us to have ours (which is backed by science). This losing is getting boomer level annoying," Alexander wrote on Telegram, Insider reported.

Jones, who has been a steadfast Trump supporter for years, insinuated that Trump had abruptly switched allegiances as a result of his vaccination......

The disavowal of Trump's most devoted followers underscores the extent to which medical misinformation and anti-vaccine sentiment have taken over the conservative base, making even lukewarm endorsements of vaccines off-limits. These are the same people who have stood by Trump through a number of scandals, including bragging about sexual assault on camera, two impeachment trials, and an attempted insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

That's one. The party powers want him out(without offending his volatile base)
That's two. He learned while in the primaries he had to keep feeding the beast(base again). Posturing from the outside is too difficult.

So if he had gone silent he would have faded, but maybe lived on in legend in his people. Probably the constant unimpeded real world media and party leaders would have hastened the decomposition by any memes necessary.

If he keeps posing he is in constant legal peril and needs some version of sanity supporters to stay in the game.

If the base turns on him in ANY significant numbers the shallow but vocal support fades over all. he only survives on an illusion that he had the numbers and on the reality that the GOP NEEDS an emotional base to cloud reality like some evil Dr. Strange.

The party leaders can help him pretend as they have to- politely- wait out the decomposition.

Factually, he is a loser with nothing to offer anyone but misery. His brief stint as tinpot dictator was laughable even by beerhall Putsch standards.

He should never have been allowed to be president and the media did a typically terrible job. That ends up diverting a simple fact into impotent opposition and support of a demented clown show that still runs around the main ring of the sad GOP circus.

Electing any other Republican will only hasten the decline and extinction of life on this planet. An unpleasant reality. The Democratic Party might not be up to saving us, but really. Can people really get together on their own survival?
Do we all have to die in shame as a failed (semi)intelligent species?

Trump blathers on. So does all noise pollution. I listen through that tinnitus.
