Altercation: MSM Discovers Fox News Isnt News
Only 25 years after it became obvious
by Eric Alterman
December 17, 2021
On the PBS NewsHour Tuesday night, anchor Judy Woodruff and NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik discussed the recent text messages sent by Fox News hosts to White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows during the January 6 violent insurrection. Woodruff wondered whether in terms of what we knew aboutwe have known in the past they have spoken favorably of a former President Trump for years. But does this take it to a different level, do you think? Folkenflik added, And so I think that what you have here is a question of Fox News having that word news appended to its name, but not operating like a news operation.
Ive been writing about Fox News since it first began broadcasting 25 years ago. The first story I remember had to do with the fact that New Yorks then-mayor Rudy Giuliani, at the behest of Roger Ailes, used the power of his office to force Time Warner Cable to carry Fox in New York. It had originally been left off the dial and could not likely have survived without that market. That gives you a clue that maybe it was not a typical news station from moment one.
Those clues have been mounting on a daily basis ever since. I cant count the number of times Ive felt compelled, in different fora, to argue that what Fox does is not and has never been news. I think my clearest statement of this fact, and of the problem that everybody pretended that this was not case, came in a Think Again column I wrote in 2010 on the website of the Center for American Progress. The piece, headlined Just What Exactly Is Fox News? began with this:
This is a mistake. Fox is something newsomething for which we do not yet have a word. It provides almost no actual journalism. Instead, it gives ideological guidance to the Republican Party and millions of its supporters, attacking its opponents and keeping its supporters in line. And it does so at a hefty profit, thereby turning itself into the political equivalent of a perpetual motion machine.
snip//
I cant bear at this point to list all the times Ive tried to make the point that real journalists debase themselves and their profession by participating in the destructive and debilitating charade of treating Fox journalists as their colleagues. Readers might recall that, at one point, the Obama administration tried to address Foxs dishonesty by barring its officials from appearing on Foxs Sunday shows. The administration was attackedand Fox defendedby the likes of CNNs Jake Tapper, and The Baltimore Suns David Zurawik, with assists from Maggie Haberman, the Times White House correspondent, NBCs Jonathan Allen, the Associated Presss Zeke Miller, and Politicos Jack Shafer, and sadly, many, many others; thereby helping to enable Foxs lies, and with them the systematic destruction of our democracy and our planet.

(3,585 posts)When Pres Obama was being ruthlessly trashed by Fox News, my idea was that he should invite The Onion News to his press breifings, and made sure that the 'correspondent' from The Onion News sat right NEXT to the Fox News correspondent, so that every camera shot showed The Onion News guy when the Fox News guy asked a question.

(345 posts)Does it make me a bad person to have wished that the "Fox Christmas Fire" had spread into their studios?
The only tool we have to take Fox down is to boycott cable providers that include it in their basic package. I shudder to think that the nation is put in grave danger by the likes of Rupert Murdoch and his minions, but here we are.

(7,280 posts)something like that. Nixon apparently didn't want that to be the name (too obvious, I guess).

(633 posts)Whenever Trump used the term Fake News (aimed at MSNBC, CNN etc), my mind would go straight to Fox News! I'd hear the term Fake News and instantly my mind would go to Fox News (and OAN, Newsmax etc)

(19,208 posts)but they're convinced (I wonder where they got this idea from?) every news channel but Fox ( they never talk about Sinclair, Newsmax or OAN) is ultra-liberal and turning the country into communists.
I guess that's how they come to grips with Sinclair, Fox, Newsmax, OAN, etc. and their fascist joyride toward autocracy. We're all "communists" from watching CNN or MSNBC. Just because we prefer facts and truth over opinions.

The same outlets they call "fake news".
Just like the GOP doesn't actually govern, they just kick back and snipe at those who do.
Think how different our country would be today if we never allowed Rupert Murdoch to enter our media markets.

(23,323 posts)For months, my lunatic, right-wing family members had been babbling about a new 'news' network. "Fair and balanced, fair and balanced" was the phrase of the day. After a few weeks of it being on the air, I decided to see what "fair and balanced" looked like. The very first image I saw was Bill O'Reilly and a blonde woman. O'Reilly was saying "I have absolutely no respect for Hillary Clinton." That is a direct quote. At that moment, I knew what I had only previously suspected.

(18,715 posts)They were specifically speaking of Hannity and Ingraham, but credibility during their so called hard news hours is waning with each resignation.
I think Fox Entertainment work for me.

(18,715 posts)...by saying Hannity and O'Reilly were more entertainment and weren't delivering the news. That way they didn't have to act impartial. He cited the daytime programming, and Shepperd Smith specifically, as the hard news.
He's just giving up trying to be a news channel now with the recent exit of Chris Wallace.
