Never paid more than $60 in my life. Union made in the USA. Hopefully I won't be disappointed with the quality.

(617 posts)I am talking about selvedge denim.
Ms. Toad
(34,076 posts)Unlike most fabric, most denim uses a raw edge, rather than a bound one. When jeans advertise they use selvedge denim, all it does is identify the edge treatment of the bolt of fabric. When they lay out the fabric, they use the selvedge (self edge) as the cut line on the outer seam so they can open it flat without needing to bind the edge to keep it from fraying.

Ms. Toad
(34,076 posts)Who was fixated on selvege, alone, as the gold standard.
Selvege simply means that it has a woven edge running parallel to the ends of the bolt of fabric, as opposed to a cut edge - which is the standard for most of even the cheapest fabrics.
Anyone who has ever used a pattern, or bought fabric from a bolt of fabric knows this.
Selvege denim can be high quality - or cheap. It is not the presence of selvege edges that determins the quality of the fabric.

(16,847 posts)yes I think there is too much money, at least for one person to have. Musk and Bezos come to mind. They don't seem to know what to do with theirs. At least some, like Bill Gates, use their money for philanthropy, like Rockefeller and Carnegie did. I've known people with a lot less than Musk and Bezos who still had too much money for themselves. It's a very subjective thing, I think. I'm not saying there's a solution to it either. Rich people's taxes should be higher, but that wouldn't really cut into a billionaire's stash much. But look what money did to Donald Trump. Like a lot of other things in life, I suppose, it's all in what you do with it.

(18,479 posts)They say that Richard Cory owns one half of this whole town
With political connections to spread his wealth around
Born into society, a banker's only child
He had everything a man could want, power, grace and style
chorus:
But I work in his factory
And I curse the life I'm living
And I curse my poverty
And I wish that I could be
Oh, I wish that I could be
Oh, I wish that I could be Richard Cory
The papers print his pictures almost everywhere he goes
Richard Cory at the opera, Richard Cory at a show
And the rumor of his parties and the orgies on his yacht
Oh, he surely must be happy with everything he's got
chorus repeated
He freely gave to charity, he had the common touch
And they were grateful for his patronage and they thanked him very much
So my mind was filled with wonder when the evening headlines read
"Richard Cory went home last night and put a bullet through his head"
chorus repeated

(16,847 posts)Life can suck if you don't have enough money, bit it can also be pretty miserable if you have too much. Sometimes people become aware of that when they suddenly come into a large sum. They always thought that all of their problems would be solved if they had more money. Then they just end up with new and often bigger problems. Not everyone is like that, bit it's pretty common.

(18,479 posts)When we are used to struggling economically, and that struggle ends, some folks are often unprepared for some new problems that those folks are not prepared for and don't see coming. Addictions like alcohol drugs and gambling can ruin lives. Having friends turn on you or finding that new "friends" aren't friends at all is really draining. It is said that anyone who has one true friend has more than his share.
My daughter has an ex whose mom won a large jackpot. In less than 2 years there were evictions and fights among the family. Whatever happens, good or bad, to change my life, I'd be careful that it wouldn't change me.

While I support high tax rates for the wealthy to fund those kinds of things that would be hard for even an extremely rich to do (like universal healthcare), I would love to be able to fund some things that are near and dear to my heart that often go underfunded.
I'd love to be able to fund living history projects, local food pantries, animal rescues, individual artists doing important, but non-commercial work. I'd love to be able to say "yes" and change lives.

Union made in the USA - they are apparently custom made, but not union made. They are constructed in the USA, but the fabric is from Japan.
Better fabric because it is selvedge denim. A 5-minute perusal of any fabric store will show you that most fabric has selvedge edges (it's just that different weave on the edge of the fabric to ensure it doesn't fray. A lot of denim doesn't have it for aesthetic reasons, since a lot of folks like the frayed look. Fabric with selvedge edges is not inherently better than fabric wthout.

(146,317 posts)I wear denim jeans pretty much all the time. I have, maybe half a dozen pairs. However, I don't wear them as a fashion statement. I wear them to cover my ass and my junk. I wear them to work in. I wear them everywhere. I have some more expensive ones, but for everyday wear, I wear cheap-ass ones that I don't care about if they get a stain on them from something.
No, they're not union made, I'm sure. They're not made here in the USA, either. I buy them on sale at the farm supply outlet when they're on sale about three times a year.
If I want nicer jeans, I buy Dickies or Lee. They're not union made, either. I don't know where they're made. I buy jeans because they fit, they're comfortable, and that's what I wear.

(537 posts)I wear jeans everyday. At work, my job requires it, at home because my activities require them. Same thing when I go out. But here's why I ask my question. The things I do in jeans would prevent me from being comfortable rolling 230 dollars in it. Sweat, dirt, concrete, muck, oil.. the list goes on. Just like it would be mental anguish to drive 40 thousand dollars around, rain, snow, salt, potholes, scratches, bumps, dings. I'd puke. Throw up. I make a very tidy living for a 1 person household, a Union household at that!

(8,311 posts)But it can be almost painful to read how someone else spent more than 10 times what you might have last spent on your one owned item of said clothing type, especially when you know exactly how you'd put that extra $200 saved to survival -- if you had an extra $200.
I mean, I'm happy that you have it to spend. Not equating $230 to test out one company and hope you're paying American workers by doing so with buying a private jet. But in a way it's almost easier for people looking at the first of the month with trepidation to get upset at smaller numbers, because smaller numbers are easier to think about having/spending -- and most of us have never had the money for a private jet in our hot little hands.
Anyway, much love, and I DO hope you aren't disappointed in the jeans. Or if "$230 jeans" becomes the new "breastfeeding at Olive Garden" controversy thread joke should others be less restrained in their response.
traitorsgalore
(1,396 posts)You're supposed to feed the world with that $230 instead of wearing a pair of jeans that actually fits you. I hate jeans, the last 20 pairs I've tried on all sucked, outsourced pieces of ill-fitting slave labor crap. My guess is the only way to get a pair of comfortable jeans now is to spend $200+.

All US-Made, all the way down to US grown cotton. Jeans are normally in the $40-$80 range and they have some good sales going right now (who doesn't?)
Some union made, according to their FAQ page:
"5) Are all your products union made?A Lot of our clothing is Union Made. The Union made products will say "union made..." in the detail section of the product."
I've purchased jeans from them & liked everything I bought from them. Solid quality & service. Not much variety as far as women's styles but I'm not a one-stop shop kind of person.

(15,090 posts)Not so long ago in historic terms, normal people would buy one or two pieces of clothing each season, pay a lot for them, and expect them to last. Nowadays people buy clothes almost on a whim and toss them out without a thought. Im all for buying fewer clothes of better quality and expecting them to last.
My only new clothing purchases this fall were a cotton terry bathrobe to replace one that was almost 30 years old and a recycled cashmere cardigan. Both were quite expensive and I expect both to be around for decades.
