How a seemingly minor Supreme Court case could have huge implications for NC elections

The U.S. Supreme Court has announced it will hear a “motion to intervene” request from North Carolina legislative leaders in one of the state’s lawsuits over voter ID requirements.

The announcement flew under the radar. It happened the day before Thanksgiving when many were traveling — and on its face it seems fairly minor. A motion to intervene is essentially the formal way for a person or group to say, “We weren’t sued in this case originally but think we should be involved anyway, so please let us in.”

So the Supreme Court won’t be ruling on the big question of whether North Carolina’s voter ID law is unconstitutional, just on whether GOP lawmakers can be part of the legal proceedings happening now in lower courts.

But because of a new law just passed in the state budget earlier this month, whatever decision the Supreme Court ultimately reaches could actually have major implications for future elections in North Carolina.

It's NOT seemingly minor, and it's NOT surprising about the outcome it would have maxrandb Nov 2021 #1

We need to stop allowing the media to play this; "hmm, who could have ever seen this coming?" game.

The majority on the Supreme Court, conservative think-tanks, conservative law firms, Retrumplican legislature and the Federalist Society know exactly what they are doing.

Just look at the Texas abortion vigilante law.

There were pundits using the "gee, that's really a clever and novel way to do an end around on the Constitution"

None of this is an accident.

It's a methodical, coordinated 50-60 year attack on our laws and courts in order to remake them in the image of powerful, wealthy conservatives that will bend to their will.

We need to stop pretending that these people don't know what they are doing.

The North Carolina Retrumplicans know exactly what they are doing.

The Supreme Court conservative majority know exactly what they are doing.

and both sides know what the decision will be, and what far-reaching impact it will have.

What I hate is seeing our Democracy shredded before our eyes, while we stand with our hands tied behind our backs.

Balancing on one of those surf boards, with no way to steer or keep from falling into the water.

And no life preserver to keep us from drowning.

In other words, we are helpless with more and more options being denied us to try to make things right.
