to today, from the Illuminati (good guys) of the Enlightenment, to the John Birth Society fighting the U.N. and progressivism, to the Koch types' war on action against climate change, etc.

Btw, here's another in this same string of events, a summary in the WaPo opinion section of what SIX, not 5, RW extremists on the Supreme Court means. It's extremely bad.

The Rule of Six: A newly radicalized Supreme Court is poised to reshape the nation
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/11/28/supreme-court-decisions-abortion-guns-religious-freedom-loom/

“The difference between six and five is exponential,”... With five justices to the chief’s right, they no longer need to compromise with the chief to win. ...

... There are three extremely conservative, extremely impatient justices who would go to extraordinary lengths to undo some of the most entrenched constitutional doctrine. But even the more patient justices are no moderates.

...”the Supreme Court has no power to enforce its decisions other than its own moral and political standing. So justices — and especially chief justices, who consider themselves guardians of the institution — are understandably and appropriately wary of actions that would make it appear as though a mere shift in membership and partisan affiliation suffices to change the meaning of the Constitution.

All that helps explain some of the behavior of the court’s conservative majority over the past several years,... a contest of wills between the conservative justices who want to get on with it and those who might want to get to the same place but prefer to act more incrementally.

...Still, the majority’s boldness in Brnovich was a clear harbinger of more to come, and in other areas of the law. This much was clear in the smoking ruins of the Voting Rights Act: a court that could do this could do anything. ...

It only serves as a tool of tyrants due to politicization.

Why should some justices appointed by politicians judge the laws enacted by the people's representatives?

as evidenced by your ability to post to political forums without being arrested and/or "disappeared."

As for not knowing why we need a high court, that's what we have books and informative articles for. So we can understand what we don't know.

Direct election? Appointment by the previous judges, so they're a self-sustaining group?

The court that "only serves as a tool of tyrants" struck down segregation and anti-abortion laws enacted by the people's representatives.

and the unwillingness of the US people to completely overhaul it. It's a problem more easily fixed by electing better senators, anyway. We know the Supreme Court doesn't "only" exist to make bad decisions; the problem is that it's made a lot recently. Since you didn't say how you want the top judges chosen, I assume you don't actually want to change how it's done, and are just venting.

so that it's not a lottery of who dies with what combination of Senate and Presidential power in force at the time. Pass a law that SC nominations must be considered within a reasonable time limit, such as 3 months.

The US has a pretty democratic way of choosing its highest court - it's not entirely up to the administration in power, nor it is subject to the direct whims of a countrywide election and the money that would swing that. But the crappiness of the current court is a symptom of the crappiness of Republicans, who have an unfair advantage in Senate elections.

If you want a solid long term fix, change the "2 senators per state however big or small in population" rule. But that involves rewriting the US Constitution, which needs a willing populace. Which is a couple of generations off, at least.

If people stopped believing in the power of a small group of people in Washington, it would cease to exist.

Therefore, it doesn't objectively exist.

I agree that the concept of "theory" has been distorted.

People in common language, use "theory" to mean a thought, hunch, hypothesis, or simply conjecture.

In science, a Theory is a well constructed, well formulated explanation of a phenomenon that is backed by empirical evidence to the point that it is the closest thing to certainty within the scientific method.

How can two such disparate meaning apply to the same word...right?

I think we are in a losing fight however. I don't think that people are going to stop using theory in the common usage anytime soon.
