Because here in western Pennsylvania where cases are spiking, more than half the people in any given grocery store aren’t masked and many of the ones who are masked aren’t doing it right. Just this week, I watched a woman ahead of me in line at the checkout pull down her mask so she could see better as she rummaged for something in her purse. This is why I still wear an N95 mask.

nurse and I can't wear the N95s that look like a duck bill. I can't wear the regular 3 M N95s. I have to wear the small N95s. I wouldn't know any of that if I wasn't fit tested.

I do think however if I wore two procedure masks it might be similar to wearing an N95 that doesn't fit correctly.

I wear cloth masks to stores. I'm tripple vaxxed.

But, for people high risked with poor immunity or the elderly I don't understand why the government doesn't offer fit testing for N95s that you can purchase now at hardware stores.

But do have a snug fit. The Kimberly Clark duckbill fits me well. I’ve tried a couple of other brands that leak around the edges. If fit testing were available, I’d definitely take advantage of it.

Also in western PA, and I work a lot in east Ohio. On any given day, I see--at most--1 in 20 customers wearing a mask in the businesses I enter. Also zero social distancing.

Employees at these businesses are often, but not always, better about it, and only at major chain stores. Mom-n-pop locations can't be bothered, which is yet another reason to avoid mom-and-pop locations.

And if, god forbid, you speak up about it, then you are unambiguously made to feel like an asshole for it.

Of course, they say 1,5 M (1½ meters) instead of 6 feet, and the rest is in German, but this is an accurate depiction.

The funny thing is that in airports, they ask people to maintain 1½ meters distance from one another, and then pack them like sardines in full planes.

Scholz is a lifelong bureaucrat. He has always lived off the government's money, never earned a cent out there in the real world. Ergo: governed by theories with no practical experience in bearing the consequences of his actions or decisions. That USUALLY ends badly (think Putin's pal Schröder). But it doesn't have to.

Maybe you remember the old joke about European heaven and European hell?

In European heaven, the French are the chefs, the Italians are the lovers, the Germans make the cars, the Swiss are the administrators and the British are the police.

In European hell, the British are the chefs, the Swiss are the lovers, the French make the cars, the Italians are the administrators and the Germans are the police.

If the new coalition is to succeed, German coalition heaven will mean the Social Democrats will oversee education and welfare, the Greens will oversee environmental and foreign policy, and the Free Democrats will oversee tax policy. German coalition hell will mean the Free Democrats will oversee environmental policy and welfare, the Social Democrats will oversee foreign policy, and the Greens will oversee tax policy and education.

I expect that, as usual, some mixture of the two extremes will emerge. My fear is, again, as usual, that actions will be poorly thought out and ultimately detrimental, and that reactions will be basically positive, and well-intentioned, but too little and too late.

My wife, a solid-but-pragmatic lifelong supporter of the SPD and the Greens, is nevertheless for requiring all members of the German government, both parliament and ministers (cabinet secretaries) to have worked for a living before becoming professional bureaucrats. Too often, decisions are made and voted into law by people who have never had (and will never have) any need to live with the consequences of their votes and decisions. What they need is Barack Obama, and what they get is John P. Wintergreen.

Having 3 German 'Host' daughters, all in their mid 20's, this means a lot to me.

None of them talk about politics, though one is a Vegan Activist, so it's nice to get a synapsis of the state of affairs over there from a third party.

That doesn't mean there aren't people who think I have it all wrong, of course. For that matter, you don't have to look far to find people on DU who think the same thing!

But my take is shared by many Germans who ARE right in the middle of it as well. One of our closest friends is a retired political journalist for West German news radio. He was station chief in Moscow for 5 years. He is the one who gets me guest spots on German radio as a guest commentator gigs representing the Democrats Abroad in Germany, since he is still closely dialed in with his former colleagues. His take on Russia, as well as his experiences with the place are also all first-hand. He speaks and reads Russian, now has a Russian girlfriend who speaks only Russian, and keeps in touch with life there as much as with what's going on here in Germany.

it still won't work on the true unbelievers. Even if they do accept the science, it's their "right" to infect was many as they please with a dangerous pathogen. Strange people, Americans. Some of the most illogical of an illogical species. Makes you wonder how on earth we went from the African savanna to sending probes into interstellar space.

How do we make them care about whether they're infecting themselves and other people? How do we get them to take precautions, when they're being told it's all a hoax?

Those of us who already believe in science, well we don't need to be told ... but an occasional reminder is always good.
