If you are currently in a national guard unit, you are going to have to make some difficult decisions.
You will not be facing hippies and students protesting a foreign war. Students who might throw rocks at you. Youll be facing insurrectionist, armed people who wish to overthrow our democracy. This will not be a Kent state. They will not be throwing rocks. They have AR-15s.
I was in the National Guard in 1970. To take action against your neighbors, even if you disagree politically, is not easy. This is different. The neighbors you will be facing want to kill you.

(1,305 posts)While its very difficult for a grunt to decide which is and which isnt a legal order, its very easy to just go along. It can be life threatening, in fact, to disobey a direct order on a battlefield, whether that battlefield is in some foreign clime or your own home town. Thats the ultimate job of MPs after all, literally to shoot down soldiers running from a fight when ordered to go forward.
One thing I find interesting is that authoritarians immediately declare gun ownership illegal as soon as they take over. Right now any yahoo can own as many guns as they want. They somehow think this gives them power to resist a police state. The reality is that their quasi militia power may help the authoritarian they support secure power, but their right to bear arms goes away the minute the Constitution is suspended. The National Guard troops they supported as they put down an illusory antifa uprising will quickly be making sure they dont leave their homes with their guns, then probably be going door to door to take them away.
