General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo I basically requested that my husband to stop looking at the CNN website
He does this out of habit. Also NYT.
Screaming headline right now on CNN: "Harris struggles with her relationship with Biden"
I suggested he read ProPublica and Texas Tribune.

(16,310 posts)I have really trusted the Miami Herald and to some extent the WaPo. Long ago, SF Chronicle, SJ Mercury News, Denver Post, etc.
It's been hard to stay on top of who owns what news outlets and who to trust.
Do you have any suggestions?

Personally, I respect (and subscribe to) The Guardian. I also subscribe to the NYT which has researched and published hard-hitting articles about Trump and the Jan 6 insurrection.

I'm not going to post the story @CNN
just did on @VP
Kamala Harris (and hope you don't) but it went out to MILLIONS of CNN's followers and its terrible design could not be more clear.
CNN is ATTACKING Kamala Harris on the day they are running a PRO CHRIS CHRISTIE DOCUMENTARY.

(34,522 posts)I didn't read the article but what's up with the headline?
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)fills in information to explain the headline and maintain journalistic "integrity"; the actual facts may tend to turn out to be much more positive, even vry good. Problem is, most people just check the headlines. And they'll still do their best not to allow people who read the article to take away a wholly positive impression.
In 2016 I used to count the negative-sounding NYT headlines in the political section about Hllary each day. Tended to run about 5 to 7 each day. Won another state primary? Headline might mention accusations of stealing it or stress a narrow margin as a near defeat, etc.

(7,611 posts)Because you don't like a story is no reason to ignore it. Otherwise it's just like only inhabiting Fox world.
Per the CNN story: I noticed something about the President's daily schedule that gets printed in Politico Playbook most mornings a couple of months ago. I thought about posting about it but figured I would get flamed so I didn't. And I'm still going to keep quiet.
PS I prefer Anderson Cooper to the other guy.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)and outright lies, though, what happens when you run new information through what you know for evaluation? There's lots of valuable coverage in the NYT, AP, etc, but there are also concerted campaigns to sabotage Democrats and keep conservatives in power.
Oh, the answer is that your beliefs that Democrats are as bad or worse than Republicans just keep being proved true and there's no one to vote for.

(7,611 posts)And then make your own judgment. Even a biased story tells you something about the author that might be valuable to know.

(7,304 posts)Both suck.
Get your news from reputable independent journalists.
After all, reputation is something that CNN, the NYT and the other mouthpieces of the 1% can't buy.

(3,696 posts)He reads the same websites day after day (including a lot of technology websites. He LOVES computers.) I used to do the same thing, but started getting very bored.
I have been trying to encourage him to have more VARIETY in his reading (I am much more of a reader than he is. Just like I am trying to share my 1000+ books on my Kindle with him. Thats not going so well 😂.)
This is partly because of extreme pandemic related boredom.
We need to break out of our comfort zones. I am trying to get better at technology beyond being driven mad by trying to master WordPress. Or trying Pinterest and Canva.
I have been trying to vary our computer usage and trying new things - right now were planning on launching a YouTube channel.
This will utilize his tech skills and my creativity. Hes getting very good at editing videos. A new skill and fun to do!
BTW, he hates Trump as much as I do.

(13,582 posts)It was only when that fascist former guy was at his absolute worst that they decided there was money to be made bashing him. Now they are back to their old tricks attacking Democrats because their corporate advertisers are terrified they will have to pay some taxes like the rest of us suckers.

(102,047 posts)ProPublica is an excellent investigative journalism site, but it would never claim to be a general news site. And the Texas Tribune reports on Texas, unsurprisingly. Your knowledge of news ought to be larger than your state.
