A nurse who claims to have a religious objection to vaccines went viral over the weekend after she claimed to lose her job at Kaiser Permanente.
In a video that had been viewed over a million times on Twitter, the nurse says she is being escorted out of the building by security because she refused the Covid-19 vaccine.
"I am being escorted out of Kaiser Permanente hospital for my religious beliefs because I don't want to get the jab," she explains. "And I asked all day for someone to explain to me why my sincerely held religious beliefs are not good enough for Kaiser. And no one was able to do that for me. So now they're escorting me out because I wanted an answer and I'm not leaving without an answer."

If a surgical nurse claimed to have a religious belief that meant she couldnt use antibacterial soap, would she still be allowed to be a surgical nurse and just not scrub in, because freedom? If your belief means you cant give safe, effective care, its not the job for you.

(32,100 posts)Anyone else remember the BBC's "You Are What You Eat?" Ol' Gillian would shame people over their diets, inspect and analyze a fecal sample, and then put them on some pseudoscientific quack diet. If they didn't stick with it, she'd move in with them and harrass them until they did. She's awful.

(42,663 posts)how about she explain exactly what religion she belongs to, how long she has been an adherent of that religion, and also provide a copy of their doctrinal statement of objection to the vaccine?
Might as well claim that you have a sincerely held religious belief that you need a vodka martini every afternoon.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)but members of the Church of the Holy Martini would presumably need to be able to at least produce a doctrinal statement.
Happily, her own evidence of this little stunt should survive for future HR departments to turn up. Spending "all day" at Kaiser after she supposedly no longer worked there harassing everyone she could find. Oh, yeah!

Instead, I offer another possibility that lies of this sort are uttered precisely because they come with costs. I propose that political lies are a costly signal of tribal loyalty.
Remember, in economics, signaling means much more than just trying to prove something. Signaling in econ is basically when people jump through hoops in order to prove themselves. You might take a useless but difficult college course or math test, just to prove to future employers that youre smart. Or you might get a tattoo to prove your loyalty to a yakuza gang, even though the tattoo would make it harder to get into a Japanese public bath or get a normal job. The fact that the signal comes with a cost is essential to separating the dedicated people from the posers.

Political lies could function similarly to the gang tattoos. By going on record as saying that we should seriously consider the possibility that climate change might not be real, you exposure yourself to a lifetime of ridicule. But that very exposure might prove that youre the real thing, hardcore, really on the team, to a partisan audience who might otherwise be inclined to question your conservative bona fides. After all, if you were really a cuckservative or RINO, would you really have been willing to risk your reputation in the media world or in East Coast intellectual circles just to spread some FUD about climate change?
