Can getting the vaccine give you Covid?

OK, title is somewhat clickbait, but it kinda did happen to a friend of mine whom I had not seen since pre-pandemic days, and he mentioned that he had Covid last March.

He had no side effects from his first Pfizer shot, but started feeling bad a few days later and went to the Doctor. He was confirmed as having Covid, and while he was very sick for several days, he recovered without going to the hospital.
In getting info from him to submit to CDC, the Doctor told him it was almost certain that he acquired the virus during the 45 minutes or so that he sat in the Walgreens waiting area to get his shot. He said that the virus starts to grow as soon as you get the necessary load of viral spores, while the vaccine takes days to begin to offer protection, so he basically had to endure a non-vaccinated case.

He said it was a funny story, but funny only because he survived it.

Just because they happened at the same time does not mean one caused the other.

I got the shot on a Thursday and was exposed the next Monday and caught Covid. It happens.

He caught the virus while getting his vaccination, so an FOX/anti-vax falsehood would be that getting his shot caused him to get sick.

Including waiting after getting the shot to ensure no immediate adverse reaction, was the riskiest thing I had done since first going into lockdown.

Fortunately, the length of time of potential exposure matters, and one has to be quite unlucky to catch it during that window of only 45 minutes or so.

He said he had not been out of the house in a couple of weeks until going to get the shot, and then had been at home until he started feeling bad enough to go to the Doctor.
He said that he and everyone he noticed in Walgreens were masked, but he just happened to be unlucky that day.

You can get Covid and spread it to others after you are vaccinated. It's pretty rare. I read that 1 in 5,000 get a breakthrough case.

He got it like all people get it. He didn’t kinda get anything from the vaccine except possibly the mild side effects and a very valuable tool in fighting off any future infections.

it was a joke. He caught Covid while getting his Covid vaccination shot. He said that getting the vaccine resulted in him getting Covid, and he thought that was funny, but only because he recovered with no ill effects.

everybody masked up, space set aside for soc-dist, etc.

Your local pharmacy obviously has less room to do that.

Glad to hear your friend came out on top.

for my first Moderna shot. We were widely spaced apart the whole time we were there. For the second Moderna shot, I drove around to the back of the building. I stayed in my car and was given the shot in my car. Tomorrow I am going to the clinic for my flu shot. The VA is not giving a Moderna booster shot until it gets the okay from the CDC.

...we went to two different places which had a high school field house.
Shots were administered in half the gym, the 15 minute wait the other half.
They had painters' tape Xs on the floor and every chair was 6' from the next.
In both places, they did an excellent job. They could because the venue was perfectly suited.

Well done.

I guess he technically "got COVID-19" from literally "getting the vaccine". Not from the vaccine, but from the act of getting it.

I am glad to hear your friend is okay. Hopefully they will not suffer any of the long term effects. I had a young and healthy co worker get it and while almost fully recovered, does suffer some bouts of shortness of breath that they did not suffer before the illness.

Just roll down the window and stick your arm out. My booster was at my pharmacy, but they had a large waiting area, with chairs widely spaced.
