Now that's turning snowflake up to 11.
I mean, how much idiocy can you pack into one article? Beating up on Black icon because they're a black social icon, stating the whole point of the Olympics is to "win for America", denigrating someone's personal struggle, feeding the entire "black folks performing for us" American trope, condescension, getting hysterical about a non-news story, changing the topic because they're being exposed for undermining the Constitution, and pretending to be interested in something that we know perfectly well riders of the Federalists are not interested in -- they're checking off ALL the boxes on this one

Just an FYI.

(54,027 posts)Humans migrate. I'm white, but I've never really got that "European American" thing. I'm comfortable seeing America as a blend. We need to do it better and atone for the injustice that happened along the way, but I don't like what happens when we start hyphenating each other by default.

(102,298 posts)These people are not only callous, clueless, sociopaths, they are dangerous to us all.
Julissa Gomez was a 1988 U.S. Olympic contender until a vault accident put her in a coma & left her a quadriplegic. She eventually died from her injuries at 18. People calling for Biles to "tough it out" haven't thought through the implications.

(11,740 posts)Simone Biles does not owe the United States a damn thing. You can certainly say, "It is sad that Biles is not able to compete and give the US a stronger chance of bringing home gold." I am sure she is disappointed in the situation as any competitor would be. That said, fuck those people who are saying she should "tough it out". Those punk asses can't even "tough out" wearing a piece of cloth over their mouth and nose to stop a pandemic that killed over 600,000 Americans and 4 million around the world.
I have played high school and competitive sports. I played through injuries. I played a basketball tournament on sprained ankles and dislocated both my pinkies, because of that mentality of "tough it out". What to I have now? Trophies... and perpetually sore ankles, deformed and painful pinkie joints.
Biles has represented the United States far better than any of the idiots who are pontificating as if they had any actual skin in the game. They can all eat shit.

(102,298 posts)While I was never a player that would have made a difference for the team, I still felt the pressure to go out there and do the best I could, regardless.
But, I disagree that this account is not needed. Most criticizing her most vehemently are likely doing so for their own malicious agenda... But some really do NOT realize how damned dangerous the sport is.
Most non-contact sports carry little risk of life-threatening injury (assuming no underlying congenital cardiac disease). But gymnastics, the lifts in figure skating, most of the skiing/boarding events of the winter games, and many other sports I can't even name right now, do. The best make it look easy. We need to internalize that it is not.

I believe when making the call, she had the teams needs in mind. If she wasnt ready, she couldnt help them.
I dont expect a bunch of liars and cheaters to understand that. Her team will.

(54,027 posts)Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you, in the most solemn manner, against the baneful effects of the spirit of party, generally.
This spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind. It exists under different shapes, in all governments, more or less stifled, controlled or repressed; but in those of the popular form, it is seen in its greatest rankness, and is truly their worst enemy.
The alternate dominion of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which, in different ages and countries, has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism; but this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result, gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an Individual

(3,334 posts)It should be about the athletes and not what countries they come from.
Bucky
(54,027 posts)But the flagging in the games is partly an artifact of the age of nationalism when the Olympics restarted in the 1890s.
Honestly, that kind of civic rah-rah boosterism is an important way for many athletes to build the enthusiasm and support they need to get into the games. It builds audience, it builds support for the games, and it as a layer to the spirit of competition.

(10,689 posts)the Olympic Games always felt like a unique opportunity to utterly defeat other countries and prove, again and again, that the USA is the greatest country on earth, and other countries suck...
