A mostly white high school basketball team in Southern California has been stripped of its regional title after tortillas were thrown at a predominately Latino opposing team following a championship game last month, officials announced Wednesday.
"After a thorough review and analysis of the incident following the conclusion of the Division 4-A regional basketball championship game between Coronado High School and Orange Glen High School, the (California Interscholastic Federation) state executive director reiterates that discriminatory and racially insensitive behaviors toward an opponent contravene the principles of education-based athletics," the federation said in a news release.
Based on investigations of the incident, "The 2021 Southern California Boys Basketball Division 4-A Regional Championship is vacated," the release states.
On June 19, Orange Glen High School's predominantly Latino team lost the championship game to largely white Coronado High School.

(823 posts)Why not ban fans from this school at all sporting events for the next year? Or suspend all sports for the next year? This feels like retribution for the acts of idiots who had nothing to do with winning the game.

(18,679 posts)Indicated players on the winning team were involved in the tortilla throwing. Also some of the confrontations between teams' players and coaches involved racial slurs.

(38,318 posts)I grew up in an affluent 99% white community.
It could get ugly.
Quitting high school and leaving that place are two of the better decisions I've made in my life.
The interesting thing is that most people there didn't consider themselves racist -- rather they were "color blind."
They were also blind to all the harassment people who were not straight, white, or the right sort of Christian endured.
More diverse teams must have felt like they were entering hostile territory.

(2,244 posts)other half of the space with North Island NAS. Trump flags, retired military, expensive (multi-million $ properties), exclusive "village" as they call it. Lost their once-sizable Republican majority in 2020. This isn't the first racist incident connected with the school.

(2,541 posts)And some sort of ban or penalties beyond probation for the next 5 yrs. IMO.
Doing this does nothing to address the root of the problem. It just creates more animosity in people. In my experience with people racism is a lot like alcoholism in the sense that a person has to realize they have a problem and be open to confronting and understanding it before they can begin to fix it.

(19,204 posts)People lose sight of what amateur sports are supposed to be about. Honesty, fair play, and sportsmanship are to be encouraged. Racism, cheating, and a "win at all costs" attitude are to be discouraged.
There's no place for disgusting actions like that in either amateur, or professional sports. It makes me sick when I see something like this in sports, but especially amateur sports.
This was a great decision. Hopefully this will discourage any other teams from considering such disgusting actions.

Also, don't they realize where the language of origin of the word Coronado?

(52,164 posts)One, apparently some of the players participated in this which the headline doesn't address. But even if they didn't I would fully agree with this. I teach high school and have attended many high school athletic events in my capacity as a teacher (and it should be noted as a student in band). And it is well known that teams can, and often are, penalized for the behavior of the fans. It isn't a state secret needing to be divined by interpreting redacted documents, it is a clearly stated, clearly enforced principle of behavior. This was egregious, premediated conduct richly deserving of punishment.
