Britney Spears has had enough.
The pop icon virtually went before a court Wednesday to speak publically for the first time about the conservatorship, overseen by her father, that has controlled almost every aspect of her life for 13 years .
It is my wish and dream for all of this to end, said Spears. I want my life back.
Her anger over her situation was palpable, and her tone starkly contrasted with the often saccharine persona she presents on her Instagram, which is awash with fluffy kittens, butterflies, roses, and dance routines. She seemed to be all too aware of this discrepancy.
After Ive told the whole world Im okay, its a lie, she said. Im not happy, I cant sleep, Im depressed, I cry every day.
She said that she would like to be able to sue her family over the position theyve left her in, and said that her lawyer, whom she did not choose for herself, never told her that she was able to petition to terminate the conservatorship.
I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive, said Spears. My request is to end the conservatorship without being evaluated like before.
...
From the get-go, Spears was opposed to her once-estranged father asserting control over the conservatorship, according to the New York Times. Despite her position, a judge concluded that her father was best suited to take the reins.
A day before Wednesdays hearing, the Times, citing confidential court documents, revealed that the pop icon had been trying to terminate the restrictive conservatorship agreement for years. Despite raking in millions of dollars through record-breaking albums and tours, she wasnt allowed to have control of her own credit cards, had to seek her fathers approval for the most basic of decisions like repainting her own kitchen cabinets, and wasnt even allowed to make new friends without him signing off first.
He loved the control he had over me, one hundred thousand percent, said Spears at the hearing, in reference to her father, who was reportedly not on the virtual call.
And, she noted, she didnt understand why she was restrained by a conservatorship when shes working. The Times also revealed that her father makes $16,000 per month as a salary for being her conservator, which is twice the monthly allowance shes given. He also gets a cut from her world tours.

I can empathize with her. My father was incredibly controlling into my 30s. When I was a teen, I had a reasonable but unfounded fear that he would go to court, make himself my guardian indefinitely, and put me into a psyche ward (complete with "medications" ). My father was a sociopath and I was on to him but to keep me off balance, he labelled me with oppositional defiant disorder. He successfully controlled my sister. Our mother would resist but lacked the energy it took to stop him. When I moved out of his house, he couldn't control me in any way, even with money. If Spears' father is using his position to control her in every little way, yeah, she should get him out of her life, even by court.
On the other hand, if Spears is not mature emotionally and/or mentally to administer her assets, then perhaps another conservator, a neutral person who isn't family, should replace her father and the matter reviewed every 3-5 years. She could learn how to manage her assets with the help of a financial advisor, not necessarily a conservator.

(56,347 posts)She's made a lot of money and it's still coming into her estate from royalties etc. so she's got a cushion of legally made assets most don't have.
It's kind of hard to go through sixty million as it's generating hundreds of thousands in interest just sitting there.

(37,282 posts)If she's "not mature emotionally and/or mentally to administer her assets", then that's on her. She's not a kid nor does she have some clear incapacity. Those are her assets, she can get financial advice and if she wishes she can pay people to manage portions of it, but it should be her decision, not a conservatorship.

(1,910 posts)Everyone is taking wild guesses, the dad's a beast, Free her, etc.
We have no idea if what we are hearing and seeing is the truth or if her 'boyfriend' and his family are manipulating her.
The truth could from she can absolutely handle her own affairs to they end the conservatorship and within 5 years she is strung out on drugs, broke, and her boyfriend's family ends up with all her assets that she freely signs over to them.
Again...we have no clue and are merely speculating...the court has much more information from the parties, including mental health experts, as to what the real status is.

(12,417 posts)a neutral 'conservator' and solve the bulk of the issues here. This probably should have already taken place. No clue why the father is still in his position over vocal objection(s). Even a person with legitimate needs for oversight has some rights in this regard. (or so I reason anyway)

(6,291 posts)experts qualified to render such opinions In the best interest of Britney. A conservatorship is not granted lightly especially with someone of Britneys status. I know I was happy to see her out of the headlines where she was visibly suffering from mental illness. This Free Britney movement is absurd and those pushing the conspiracy theory of Britney the victim of exploitation by her father know little about law and/or mental illness.

but there is no reason to keep her father as her conservator depending on the options. Invoke a trust company for financial conservatorship, and either release the personal one or give it to someone else.

(22,360 posts)what i read here is terrifying. Brittney is never going to make it into mensa, but the restrictions imposed on her are the kind of thing i would only expect to hear about for a person that is completely physically and mentally disabled and unable to care for themselves in any way.
She cannot even be allowed to make a decision on her IUD??? It is terrifying to me to think that someone can even have a restriction like that imposed on them LEGALLY by a court in this country, if they are at least of sound mind and body even if not the best decision maker in the word or smartest person.
I would see restricting her access to some money so she doesn't blow it all, but... come on. Can't even make your own medical decisions???

I think she needs prudent financial advisors more than a conservatorship. She sounds competent enough to select several and let them run her investments.

If she could prove just one of these accusations, it would show she was very much exploited.

(6,291 posts)under the control of a conservator. I have to believe the medical records support the Judges actions and now that she receives therapy and meds she can argue her case in a coherent fashion. Imagine if she is left to her own devices she will pregnant and broke within a few years. Her father saved her life and the wolves are ready to pounce should the Judge grant the the relief requested. Basically, the judge should base her decision on the medical evidence which I dont believe the public has access to.

(22,360 posts)Britney Spears did it again the pop singer has recently been in the news for her ongoing conservatorship and civil liberties battle with her father, Jamie Spears. This past week, Britney asked a California court to keep her father from being her conservator and having broad control over her life decisions and career. But what exactly is a conservatorship, and what are the implications of it? We sat down with Zoe Brennan-Krohn, staff attorney with the ACLUs Disability Rights Project, to discuss Britney, conservatorship, and why this is a disability rights issue on our radar.
Q: Can you briefly explain Britney Spears situation, and the implications of her conservatorship case?
Britney Spears is subject to a court-imposed conservatorship (in most other states this structure is referred to as a guardianship). This means that a court has determined she is unable to provide properly for her food, clothing, or shelter. The court has then granted other people her conservators the legal right to make decisions for her. News reports indicate that this has been the case for Britney since 2008. While we do not know the details of Spears conservatorship, in general, conservators like those in her case have the ability to make decisions about all aspects of her life where she lives, where and how she spends her money, what medications she takes, who she spends time with, and other decisions.
Q: Can you please break down, what is conservatorship? What does it mean?
Conservatorship means the court is taking away the civil liberties from one person and giving them to someone else. Sometimes its ALL of that persons civil rights and civil liberties, and sometimes its partial. But it is the court weighing into the persons life and saying you, as a person with a disability, are no longer able to make decisions about yourself and livelihood such as where you live, and how you support and feed yourself and we are putting someone else in charge of making those decisions. Because its such an extreme step to take, its really supposed to be a last resort. And once a court has put a person under a conservatorship, only a court can lift that conservatorship.
