Brass is a non-ferrous metal and as such will not "stick" to a magnet. It's sweat and surface tension if anything.
But goddammit why can't the news media just make that point and put this issue to bed.

(30,613 posts)Silver is most definitely non-magnetic.

(35,446 posts)magnetic but a ring and neckless that are not. Depends on the alloy. But I haven't seen any keys made from SS.

(6,009 posts)He could be inducing currents in those non-ferrous metals to allow them to interact magnetically. If you take a really strong magnet (like a rare earth magnet)and move it close to a large chunk of copper, and then move it away, you'll feel a magnetic interaction between the magnet and the induced magnetic field from the copper.
But inducing a magnetic field like that requires a changing magnetic field (which you would produce by moving the rare earth magnet). If you just set the rare earth magnet on top of the copper block, the magnetic field of the copper would go away, as the induced currents in the magnet die out.
So, if Magneto has the power to create magnetic fields, and vary them in time, then it's actually somewhat plausible that he could use those powers to control even non-ferrous metal, insofar as any mutant power is plausible.
This vaccine nonsense, however, is just utter lunacy.

(10,295 posts)Thats how generators work. If I thought about it a bit I could remember, but too much work for me these days.

(14,970 posts)The fact that most keys are brass is irrelevant. You could cut a key out of any metal, even iron.
BUT.....
The science is not there to support the human body being able to generate a magnetic field strong enough attract anything of any mass. It just isn't possible given the makeup of our bodies, even though we do have iron in our blood.
Look, if it were an issue we would be literally torn apart by a MRI scan. Ever see what happens to metal near an MRI? Same thing would happen to us.
It's a bullshit claim without any basis in reality. THAT is what the news should report.

(14,970 posts)All they need to do is find one steel key and hold it up with a magnet.
"See? It works, so my claims must be true since yours isn't!"

It was dumb back then too.

(65,401 posts)Nickel is slightly magnetic, but when alloyed with copper, not so much.
Lots of keys are made with that alloy, but it's typically around 25% nickel.
So, unless it's a VERY strong magnet, keys won't stick. For instance, my nickel based ignition key shows no noticeable attraction to guitar pickups.

Apparently, a guitar ain't a guitar unless it's beaten to hell.
Maybe my stuff NEEDS some scratches.

(414 posts)Saying that people think the COVID vaccines make people magnetic. They have tried to prove this point by sticking a key to their body. Well most keys will not stick any magnet no matter how strong as they are made from a non magnetic material. So their theory and demonstration to prove this theory is BS and the media is not smart enough to just tell people the scientific facts of the matter. I am a degreed and licensed Engineer and it drives me nuts (and that's a short trip anyway) that basic scientific facts are not presented when these types of goofy statements are made.
