A growing number of Democrats are calling for President Joe Biden to form a commission to investigate the attack at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, after Republican lawmakers blocked a bill that would have allowed Congress to do so.
On Friday, 35 GOP Senators blocked a bill that was passed in the Democratic-led House that sought to form a bipartisan commission to investigate the events of Capitol riot. The House-approved bill was modeled after a 9/11 style commission, and sought to establish a 10-person committee, evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, tasked with investigating the facts and circumstances of the assault.
Five people died as a result of the Capitol riot, when a mob of proDonald Trump supporters sought to disrupt the congressional certification of Joe Biden's electoral victory.
After Senate Republicans moved Friday to block the legislation through a filibuster, with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell calling the bill a "purely political exercise," Democrats are now seeking alternative ways to form the investigative committee.

Fiendish Thingy
(15,723 posts)Id rather see Adam Schiff Benghazi! the shit out of January 6, subpoena McCarthy, Gosar, Brooks, Tuberville, and yes, Trump for 11 hours of televised sworn testimony, each, than have Biden create some useless centrist think tank group of folks who werent even in the Capitol on January 6.
A HSC can make criminal referrals to DOJ- dont know if a presidential commission can.

(53,981 posts)One hardly hears complains from Bernie and AOC as he's moved substantial left of how some have perceived him. As with his admin appointments, I think he would make wise choices for such a presidential commission.
And why not? The more the better as the Speaker is definitely going to move to a House select committee, and so can Schumer in the Senate. Three investigations going would keep the GOP running...as in their pants.

(15,723 posts)Im just not convinced a presidential commission is needed. Hes already got one looking at court reform, which doesnt seem to have too many progressive voices on it, so why not let congress take care of investigating January 6?

(10,100 posts)better. I would like it to be totally public, everything, every republican that they question. Hire real investigators and then let loose on hearings.
