They will do anything to protect themselves and their political future. The whole flag-waving patriotism image was always a ruse. They will never put country first, but they will play that role whenever it suits their political needs, just like the good faithful Christian family man/woman persona. Meanwhile, the country was falling apart and just being held together with tape and spit. Nothing was being fixed or improved. More people were falling into poverty, infrastructure was decaying, and inequality was growing. I think it took something really big and bad to get us back on a progressive track.
