The Golden State stimulus.
I had no idea this was a thing. My in-laws got a check in the mail last week for $1200. They were surprised as hell. I told my unemployed buddy to check his mail (he has a habit of letting it all pile up). Sure enough, a check for $600 was in there. He was near tears (he's had a rough year financially because of Covid).
No one I know had any idea this was a thing. I feel like Gov. Newsom should be advertising the hell out of it. I mean, it's amazing what a happy surprise it is for people, but take some credit, man.
Just this week, he advocated for even more stimulus than what has already been sent out.

How did no one know about this? C'mon, Dems. Promote yourselves, damnit.
Yeah, he's not getting recalled.

(4,613 posts)for those who earned $30k or under. The governor wants to add a second $600 payment for those who earn $75k or under (those who previously received the $600 would not receive a second payment). Additionally, those with children would qualify for an additional $500, if this is passed.

(15,682 posts)I don't believe I qualify. It would have been nice, though.

(9,073 posts)The in-laws and my buddy both got their federal stimulus back in March. This new state check just came last week.
Surprised the hell out of everyone.

(15,682 posts)I'm pretty sure I won't be getting a state check. I will graciously accept it, though, if I do get one.

But still this is great news! I'll happily take another stimulus check and any unwanted ones!

(9,073 posts)The in-laws are retired and on incredibly fixed income. Which is fine. We pay their bills anyway.
But my buddy is tight, tight, tight. The extra $300 per week in unemployment is what's basically keeping him afloat at the moment. So to have that fall out of a clear blue sky. Man. Made that guy's entire month. I could hear his grin over the phone.

(6,974 posts)Not everyone in need is getting a check.
I didn't get anything from the Golden State Stimulus monies, and from what friends tell me those in my group--which means me again--won't be getting any monies from this windfall. People who are on SSI are will be getting monies from the Golden State Stimulus monies later this Summer.
I wish I was getting a check. I could use the extra monies. I'm a senior citizen, who pinches her pennies and watches what she eats. Hell, I'm nowhere near having Bill Gates money.

(12,652 posts)Use up to a point for rainy day funds, defined spending, etc -then refund the rest to citizens.
The stimulus refund is to be expected. However, I do think we need to have a wildfire/natural disaster fund that's bigger than what we currently have, and would have liked to see more refund go there.

(9,073 posts)I live in North Bay, and I don't think I've ever seen the hills go so brown so fast as early as they did this year. We had to hold our breath during the Vacaville fire last year and were all packed up and ready to go at a moment's notice.
We live in an area that is forever windy because of the geography. The past week has been particularly windy, and we were under an advisory. It was like, "Seriously, already?!"
Sigh. Going to be a long summer.

You would think after last two fires it would be a priority.

But yeah, I've been all over Solano, Napa, Sonoma, and Yolo counties the past two months, and ooft. It's a powder keg, and all it needs is one match.
One of the few amusing parts of the fires last year was the median along 80 had a lot of tall, dry grass on it. Then some idiot must've thrown a cigarette out the window, and the entire median was aflame. I was like, "Why the hell am I driving through this . . ."
Totally surreal.

(11,465 posts)They should spend it on things like that. The whole state was on fire it seemed last year.
By the way I am from the bay area just retired up in Oregon. My daughter used to live in SR but moved after house she was renting burnt to the ground. Of course she learned a hard lesson and had no renters insurance.
We had our own fire close by last fall and they are predicting a bad summer, we had very little mountain snow.
