Woke up before dawn hearing news about potential gas shortages on the East Coast. I left immediately to fill up my tank at the nearest gas station. There were no lines, and the prices hadn't gone up yet, but there were red bags on most of the pumps that had run dry.
Hopefully just a short term issue.
I imagined not having enough gas to be able to pick up my grandkids from school this week and long lines with desperate commuters later in the day.

(15,810 posts)Dh and I have been talking lately about getting an EV. I convinced him to go on a test drive with me late Saturday afternoon. Sold my car on Sunday and will pick up my EV this Friday. Im rather glad that I wont need to swing by a gas station ever again.
Im thinking that gas shortages might put a bit of a damper on the used car market. Maybe not.
I wonder if gas shortages could also affect local power grids, too.

(21,362 posts)I mean I heard that the pipeline issue affected jet fuel and diesel, apparently it also affects regular gas. I mean people have reasons to look for a snake in the wood pile.
Gas is up to $3.16 in central Pa.

(7,510 posts)There are only two left in New Jersey: Phillips in Linden and PBF Energy in Paulsboro.
There is one owned by Carlyle Group in Philadelphia. one owned by Delta Airlines in Trainer,
The is one owned by PBF Eneregy in Delaware City, DE.
There are none in ME, NH, MA, RI, CT, NY, MD, and VA.
It is all part of the deindustrialization of the East Coast by environmentalists.
There are no longer any auto plants here either. We buy foreign makes.

(205,552 posts)I've belonged to GasBuddy since 2010, have the app on my phone. It lists local gas prices in the U.S. and Canada and you can find whether stations have gas as well. I don't have their card to save on gas, already belong to a program at the local supermarket chain, but it's very helpful for keeping track of local prices:

(8,361 posts)I imagine that by the end of the day, prices will be much higher, if there's any gas left.

(205,552 posts)I use the GasBuddy app all the time to check on prices - and I post the latest prices myself on my way home. Glad that you were able to get gas today - I got gas last week while it was still well below $3. Hope GasBuddy can help, I found it in 2010 when prices were rising before.

(4,175 posts)4 hours later after litter clean up, gas was $ 3.19 at each station. This is in Illinois, so this is basically just gouging at the pump.

(13,912 posts)I don't have my generator any more but I kept the cans!!! Push comes to shove I still have my electric bike... Maybe with the gas shortage people will get out there peddling again. I don't particularly like living in "da burbs" but in times like this it comes in handy that I can walk to the stores..YMMV...

(13,912 posts)Granted the big food stores (costco/sams/publix/winn dixie) were out but small "ethnic" stores had plenty.
Same with gas. Think outside the box...And hopefully this will be over by the end of the week.. YMMV...

Something the Borowitz Report would post.

(1,381 posts)Real or perceived, the energy issues are always something that the administration is blamed for.
Low prices are reflected good, high prices bad, and shortages the worst!
Get ready for gas line photos, and inflation memes, because this is a tried and true campaign message to be used against opponents.

(22,540 posts)Paid for gas... This was the 1980's. We didn't know our govt gas subsidies lowered prices for us. Get rid of them! They just encourage wasteful gas usage, make green alternatives look expensive by comparison, and hurt the planet. Americans won't get off their complacent butts until gas prices are uncomfortable for them. Then we'll look for other solutions.
I expressed this at that time to an uncle who was in the beef cattle raising business. He conniptioned that it would hurt the cattle business if gas prices increased. So? There are benefits to that, too.
We need a decent bike lane system!!!

(32,690 posts)My nearest station gives a free slice of pizza, 16 oz coffee or bottle of water with $20 or more in gas. Near empty on my van was about $50, now it'll be $60. I get my $20 and come back the next day for another $20.They are at $2.94 today.

(1,990 posts)Right now. Because with all the industries shut down last year, it seems like many are just trying to "make back the money they didn't make" last year. I understand some why their are some shortages, but it seems like "everyone and their brother" is claiming they have to have more money for "x" because of a supposed shortage.

(13,912 posts)My father worked for a placement service to get Marine Engineers to do relief work on anchored cargo ships. He said he could not get enough worker to service all the oil tankers just over the horizon and out of sight. Why? The oil companies were not off loading the oil to the refineries.. Why? b/c the refineries were shut down for "maintenance" during the whole process. Also when they operating, they refined just about everything BUT gasoline...
The Engineers Union made a big stink to Congress and nothing Nothing happened... uff
