(25,471 posts)Permanent suspension means the same thing as banned. Permanent suspensions can be appealed, however, so perhaps that's why they use that specific terminology.

(16,389 posts)I mean, if you look up the definition of "suspend," most sources say it implicitly means something temporary. For example:
Merriam-Webster: "to debar temporarily especially from a privilege, office, or function."
Dictionary.com: "to hold or keep undetermined; refrain from forming or concluding definitely."
Collins Dicionary: "If you suspend something, you delay it or stop it from happening for a while or until a decision is made about it."
But then, the Cambridge English Dictionary says suspend means "to stop something from being active, either temporarily or permanently." Huh??[/i ]
As a former English major, I feel like I should be up in arms about this, but for some reason, I think it's hilarious. I think the internet has warped my brain.

(25,471 posts)it's usually a permanent thing. That's the language that sports teams and leagues often use. And political campaigns, for that matter. Many say they are suspending their campaigns when, in reality, they are ending them.
As you noted, suspension usually means temporary in common usage but there are some situations where it effectively means forever. It seems to be used in situations where there's a possibility of the suspension being lifted or operations being restarted, however unlikely, as in the case with Twitter via the appeals process.

When reached for comment, a Twitter spokesperson said the account was permanently suspended for violating the Twitter Rules on platform manipulation and spam.
They added:
As outlined in our policy on platform manipulation and spam, You cant mislead others on Twitter by operating fake accounts, and you cant artificially amplify or disrupt conversations through the use of multiple accounts.
The ban comes after Project Veritas released surreptitiously recorded videos of a CNN technical director criticizing the network while on what he thought were dates with a woman posing as a nurse.
OKeefe told Mediaite he plans on suing the platform: I am suing Twitter for defamation because they said I, James OKeefe, operated fake accounts. This is false, this is defamatory, and they will pay. Section 230 may have protected them before, but it will not protect them from me. The complaint will be filed Monday.

(3,626 posts)The thing the big platforms hate more than anything is having their ranking systems which select content for other users gamed, and they have advanced algorithmic ways to detect this. A friend of mine once had a constellation of 30 Reddit accounts which he used, through separate VPN's so they didn't all come from the same IP address or provider, to upvote each others' contributions. One day they were all shadowbanned. (Reddit doesn't tell you what's going on, they just arrange it so that only you can see what you have done when you are logged in as yourself, and nobody else is bothered by you.) I believe they detected that those accounts formed a group which only ever upvoted one another, and after a period of this pattern being consistent they banned him. I suspect something like this is what happened to poor ole James.
