NEW YORK - The United States is now averaging more than 3 million vaccine shots every day. Even as the program is accelerating, new cases are stubbornly still on the rise.
Side effects coming with the second dose of the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines have increased so-called vaccine hesitancy. Some people are even hoping to get away with just one shot. But the National Institutes of Health is warning against stopping at one dose.
"When you just leave it at one dose, the question is, how long does it last?" Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of NIAID, said. "And when you're dealing with variants, you're in a tenuous zone."
Dr. Paul Offit, the director of the vaccine education center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, urges people to get both shots despite the side effects associated with the second dose.
"Although it's true the second dose can cause fatigue and fever and headache and muscle ache, it is a small price to pay to be protected against this disease for a more durable or longer length period of time," Offit said.

(19,818 posts)a terrible reaction to the first.
like physical symptoms that started when you got it and your still dealing with.
Maybe a coincidence but im not willing to take that chance.
I wont be having a second shot.

(44,974 posts)So first shot won't offer that much protection.

I did some backflips when I read about it. Because I know a lot of people won't take the second shot.

(4,569 posts)does it give good protection against the variants??
As doc Fauci said in the OP:
"When you just leave it at one dose, the question is, how long does it last?" Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of NIAID, said. "And when you're dealing with variants, you're in a tenuous zone."
GET BOTH SHOTS!

(44,974 posts)First shot produced a lot less antibodies. It might be enough for 80 % protection, but it's not a lot of antibodies. And some variants are resistant to vaccine, so you need a lot more antibodies.

(25,983 posts)Also, just as there's no telling how long your protection will last with only one shot, there's no telling how long you are protected from infecting others, including your loved ones. People: if there is a second shot, GET IT. It will save your life and the lives of others.

(90,824 posts)..is a good reason to start pushing the single-dose vaccine.
no side effects either, J&J is a one dose vaccine. Just pure craziness, a sore arm is better than risking a life.
Hekate
(90,824 posts)...so I have a benchmark for side effects henceforth.
I would be grateful for the COVID vax even if it came at that price.

(9,894 posts)to both Pfizer shots except the sore arm for about 12 hours. The second Shingrix was a bit more problematic. It wasn't horrible, I went to work, but I wouldn't schedule a big event for the next day. It took three days to be completely normal again.

(10,807 posts)Till I'm up for my second shot. Looking forward to it.
I don't understand the hesitation, it baffles me.

I get mine on Friday, then I'm done! I will still self isolate and wear a mask when I go out but there will be less anxiety about it by May 1 for me at least.

(11,109 posts)As I see it, any side effects mean my body is responding to the vaccine and producing the needed antibodies. Bring 'em on.

(11,797 posts)I'll end up being one of the rare 40-somethings in England who's fully vaccinated (I'm in the US, but returning to the UK soon). It will make doing "normal" things much more relaxing (obviously I'll still be masked up in public).

(21,611 posts)I haven't been sick with anything for a long time. Yuk.
But, as you say, better than a ventilator.

(3,694 posts)On the other hand a lot of people have had no or very mild symptoms. Hopefully you'll be one of those. I'm just glad to have the shot.

(86,794 posts)Stock up on easy as making toast foods for at least three days out. I was kind of foggy and listless after the first one. My arm only hurt for about 16 hours and I've had far more painful injuries so I can handle something that feels like a bad bruise for half a day.

(4,760 posts)Given my reaction to the first one, the whole package of fever/chills/aches/immobile arm, I'm not making any plans till Tuesday.
I can't wait.

(83,925 posts)Seriously?
So they think COVID is a walk in the park, is the way to go and a piece of cake? You prefer intubation , a feeding tube, being flipped by four nurses every 4 hours so you can take a breath and hope it won't be your last. This is far better than a sore arm and some nausea?
I can't even.
craziness, geez, it's better than suffering and dying. I felt a weight is off, and I would be ready if they say you would have to get another vaccine for upcoming years like a flu shot. But there should be oral meds coming out to lessen the effects of Covid. I'm hoping.

(83,925 posts)I had a face to face with my niece the other day. Both of us fully vaccinated. She is an ICU nurse and she told me of the traumas. I knew she never had proper PPE. She is to this day wearing three masks because her N95? is not medical grade. It is suppose to be worn once and she is forced to wear it a week. In the beginning she wore a rain slicker for personal protection.
These people are selfish beyond belief and never think of anyone beyond themselves.
Get over yourselves with a little discomfort. Ooooh it hurts. Yes well, dying a slow death will hurt more.

(23,662 posts)for 3 days tops , then okay
2nd was slight sore arm, and barely yuck for 2 days ... nothing more
After 2 weeks visited my kids and grandkids, some of my kids and husbands had some shots, at least 1 each ... grands are babies so no shots
2 days later I had a cold 😕 that progressed quickly to losing my voice, but cleared in about 4-5 days ...
I had the Pfizer most others had Pfizer , 1 daughter had J&J.

(938 posts)I had a mild reaction to the second shot, but it was just some tiredness that hit 24 hours afterward. Went to bed early and was good as new the next morning. Arm soreness was a thing but too mild to count. The extra protection reported against variants is completely worth side effects of dose #2.

(26,142 posts)I got my second yesterday morning, and took off the rest of the week just in case. So far, I'm tired and have a slight scratchy throat, but waaaaaaaaay less than after my first shot, where I slept for an almost solid day and a half.

(32,731 posts)My dad suggested that he skip the second dose, but he went ahead and got it anyway. Now he's incontinent and has had relentless itching all up and down his back. The point here is, follow your gut. If you have a bad reaction to the first dose, don't dig in deeper.
